Teenage Fanclub in Manchester tonight. What should have been a great gig was spoiled by several things. Firstly the traffic problems caused by the weather (read as: tossers who shouldn't be put in charge of a hula hoop, never mind a car, crash on the slip road) made us late. Secondly, I think the venue was over its capacity and it felt overcrowded and slightly dangerous. Thirdly, the people in front of us seemed to think they were at a debating society rather than a rock concert. What the hell is that all about?

Lucky ( and busy ) man Chris I hate it when people get a few drinks in them and just want to talk rather than listen . You just want to hit them over the head with something heavy .

That really annoys me, and don't think it's restricted to rock gigs. I've had to ask people at classical concerts to be quiet, too.
I would also like to ban popcorn at cinemas. I don't want my enjoyment of the film ruined by some greedy oaf near me who is more interested in noisily feeding his face than watching the film.

I haven't been to many rock concerts where you would be able to hear anyone talk!

Unfortunately talking or singing over the music is now the norm, I've been to concerts by Rush and Neil Young completely spoiled by karaoke wannabes, one guy spoke loudly to his wife ( the sat 1 row back and about 4 seats to the left of us ) for the whole 2.5 hours of Neil Young, and the thing is YOU feel bad if you say anything to them, and as for continually getting up to go to the bar!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm due to take my dad who's 78 to see Kraftwerk next June and see if people stand up to watch in front of us there going to be blood spilled!
Just bloody sit down and enjoy it just the same, you don't need to stand, you don't need to dance, you paid for a bloody seat so use it and don't force me to stand, I've paid for a fekkin seat too!
Concert volume is the problem nowadays, if you're UP the back and above the sound it's crap and not nearly loud enough, I mean at the Rush gig at the SECC Glasgow we were far off to the side about 100 ft from the stage and all I could hear were the beer drinking assholes singing along beside me, I nearly walked out, ffs I remember the day when you couldn't hear your mate shouting in your ear standing next to you

I don't like over-loud concerts, they tend to run the PA into distortion and the whole things sounds a bloody mess and leaves you deaf for days after.
A really good gig can be so loud you're beaten and bruised from the bass, but it's never painful sounding. Roger Waters takes some beating in this regard.

I went to lots of metal / rock concerts in the 80's but the only concert that I have had to leave because it was too loud was Judas Priest a few years back. It was actually painful and I realised that if I stayed I would most likely be doing some proper damage to my hearing...

Last night at the Liverpool Echo Arena I don't have any Charlatans records and didn't realise I knew most of the songs. Tim Burgess later joined Tim Booth and James to sing Laid . Sometimes was the big encore song with the crowd singing most of it , this song was on the radio in the delivery suite when my son entered the world.

Went to see Placebo for the first time the other night. They were really good, but I just found the first half to be a little "poppy" for my liking (their debut album is still my favourite, which has a more energetic, punk basis to it). Nice tribute to Leonard Cohen at the beginning, and also to Bowie during the second half to the track Without You, I'm Nothing.
Korn on Thursday!

Iron Maiden at the O2 ArenaLast night the O2 was absolutely *rammed* I'm happy to say for Iron Maiden. Took my son with me for his first ever rock concert and it was over 30 years since I had last seen Maiden. We had great seats as you can see from the view below. The boys played a mix of stuff from the latest album and some classics as well. 'Powerslave' was the highlight for me. Nice chatting with punters from round the world - was a truly global audience ... The HD monitors were scarily good - actually 'clearer' than looking at the real thing!! Decided to set an example, so both of us were wearing ear protection. It's a shame as it kills the dynamics and frequency range but in the end I was very grateful to have it - the amps were set to '11' and it was skull-splittingly loud. I'd go again tonight if I could.

My ears weren't ringing afterwards which was great, but as I say the impact on the music was pretty brutal! I was going to buy Etymotic Research ER20 XS which are -20db across the whole spectrum, not just treble. I'll have a look at the ACS now too ... cheers. etymoticdirect.co.uk/hearing-protection/er20xs-standard

I use them a lot, even in the cinema. For some reason Hindi films are nearly always cranked up to the max, same in India, so maybe they like it that way or Bollywwod movies are mixed differently. Crazy loud sometimes.
