Just back in from a fantastic concert at Sale Waterside, by Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders andyfairweatherlow.com/I didn't know what to expect to be honest, but all members of the band are heavyweight big hitters, with a serious collection of CVs between them. Andy himself is a spritely 69 year old, and had an easy manner, self deprecating charm, and total gratitude for not having had a proper job for over 50 years. His musical abilities are beyond question, and he happily shared them with the audience. Andy has also had a fair degree of success as a songwriter, and a fair chunk of the set was comprised of his tunes, the rest of it comprising standards and classics from years past. If you're anywhere near the remainder of the tour dates go - I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Just back in from seeing Patti Smith in Manchester. What a great gig! I last saw her about 10 or so years ago and that was good, but tonight was just superb. The Rolling Stones were also in town tonight and she played a great cover of 'Paint It Black' - "We give a salute to them, even if they do charge too much for their f*****g tickets!"Brace yourself for the obligatory shite quality phone photo...

She also did a great cover of Midnight Oil's 'Beds are Burning', where the band brought the level of tension and expectation within the flow of the song up to amazing heights. Just brilliant. Her son, Jackson Smith, added an extra dimension to the other regular, long standing members of the band. He is a very good guitarist, following in his dad, Fred's footsteps. I think you will have a great night Tim.

Courtney Marie AndrewsLittle Rabbit Barn – 19 August 2018 Norwich Arts Centre – 21 August 2018I’ve seen CMA a lot over the last two years . . . pubs, festivals, a Church and fairly large sold out London shows, I’m also seeing her in Nashville in a couple of weeks. Arguably my favourite singer/songwriter right now and an artist in ascension. Both gigs were outstanding – the people I was with have also seen her before and we all commented on how much her on-stage presence has grown. For me, Courtney now deserves a place amongst the big hitters, certainly on a par with the likes of Margo Price and Kacey Musgraves. Always a double edged sword following newly discovered artists like CMA, you really want them to do well, but you know they won’t be playing such intimate venues for much longer. She played a mix of songs from 'Honest Life' and her new album, 'May Your Kindness Remain'. We also had a superb cover of Chain of Fools, with Courtney saying it was Aretha Franklin who inspired her to sing. At LRB we got 2 new songs and at NAC she ended with a really rocky version of Gone at Last. The centre piece of her shows has become Near You. Played live it’s a 7 minute rock inspired song with a rising lead guitar solo from Dillon Warnek, which highlights his skill on a Telecaster. Always a crowd pleaser this one with her generally older audience, most of whom are likely to be Joni Mitchell fans, as her songwriting style and vocal delivery is often compared to Joni. Bloody marvellous shows both of them and I’m looking forward to seeing if she’s as popular in the US as she is in the UK.

She doesn't seem to be using that gorgeous hunk of Nord very much, Tim. Do you think she'd notice if I made off with it one night? That apart, it looks like a nice "intimate" performance area, which means that the band doesn't have to worry too much about extravagant choreography. Also, as performers, it makes you more aware of each other, I think, which sorts the wheat from the chaff. Playing a space like that can make or break a performance. I speak from experience, having played smaller spaces than that as part of a 7-piece. You need to be mates as much as musicians, and hopefully the audience get a flavour of that, which adds to the atmosphere, and the enjoyment for both punters and players. It's a fabulous feedback loop...or a total disaster. I'm glad this was the former. I still want that Nord, though.

Nah, she'd never notice if it was gone . . . I'll see if I can nick it for you, easily get that out under my coat !!! You are so right about playing in small spaces too, a tight band in a small space are playing with each other, feeding off themselves and their audience (if they are performing well). Put them into a large venue or arena and it all becomes a bit clinical and more of a 'show' rather than musicians playing music. I'm not into shows, which is why I rarely go to arenas - just no magic and too fecking expensive as well. I'd rather sit at home and play music than go to a 'show'

I agree with that, the smaller gigs are invariably the more successful. Like The Delines when we saw them, Tim. I once went to see a band called Skin Games at a pub, who had a tiny bit of commercial success later before disappearing. I turned up with a friend and another couple were there, too. We all had a drink with the band afterwards!
I still have a copy of their only album.

Had a fantastic evening last night - went to Alton (the village, not the theme park) to see Joey Landreth playing live. All the performers were good, and the Joey Landreth Band went down a storm.
The venue was the newly refurbished (they literally completed the work the day before) upstairs room of the Bulls Head in Alton. And there was a production company doing a live Youtube stream of the event.
Joey Landreth is on at the 2 hour mark.

It was a great evening. I like gigs where you can have a chat with the artists afterwards.
I was very impressed with The Dunwells too.

I went to a gig by The Lone Bellow on Saturday night. They were excellent, as they were the last time I saw them. What a great bunch of musicians and performers they are.

Saw Joey Landreth at The Louisiana (Bristol) on Monday, superb night and he ran over the 10:30pm curfew! Great band too, I wasn't expecting that, thought he would be solo. Glad you liked The Dunwells too Stratmangler, they're also a good band. Joey did comment about the Alton show, said they enjoyed it a lot but it was hotter than hell in the room. Looked good on the YouTube film.
Spent last weekend at End of the Road festival, Jonathan Wilson and Colter Wall were superb and Ethiopian Jazz - who knew! I have The Long Road festival this weekend. The Lone Bellow are on the bill ChrisB, so I'll definitely be seeing them.
Far too much commercial nonsense on the line-up, but there should be enough to keep me entertained at the small stages like Honky Tonk, Front Porch, BBC Introducing and Loose Records. Lots of unsigned/unkown acts for me to seek out - I won't be bothering with any of the headline acts!!! Most of what's listed below I'm not interested in, but there's oodles more not listed - which bodes well, as the places I'll be heading should be quieter
It's the first one, so the juries out if it'll be any good? Lot's of draconian rules like no food/drink allowed to be taken in or any re-entry, they even have alcohol limits on the campsite, that's bollocks for a festival! Silly fools . . .

Oh dear, could be a very difficult weekend for me - just been running through the artists I don't know on Spotify, what a load of .........
Still, The Lone Bellow, Danny & the Champs, Yola Carter, Elizabeth Cook, Angaleena Presley and Jarrod Dickenson will be good, hopefully a few others. But this is the country all you guys think is country and on that I agree, it's shite!
