I think I have an emotional attachment towards these amps. If I had to commit right this moment to sticking with an amp for the rest of my life, it would be Exposure. You're dead right in that there is no thinness. I'd not realised that overtly until you said it. I was just aware of how happy they always make me. Has anyone tried the original Exposure CD player? I'm getting curious.

No experience of the ''original'' Exposure CD Player unfortunately. I was close to buying one 2 years ago though! It looks well made!!

OK, most of the pictures is of the amps with the lids off, even then I was a budding DIY'r Here is the XI pre amp, with the legendary IX PSU, the the IVDR power amp Here is the IVDR topless, I used to know the transformer siand cap sizes, but not now. As you can see it is a dual mono Not the best pictures as you really can't get ths scale of the trannys and caps, they a re BIG buggers

Here is the off board IX PSU for that would fit a few pre amps. Again this is a dual mono PSU as was the XI pre The top of the line pre configuration was the IX PSU and the XIV pre. I had the IX/XI

The reference power amp up from my IVDR was the XVI mono blocks. They are as rare as hens teeth. There was a chap on AoS and pinkfish had two pairs, he powered he tweeters with one of the pairs. He was in poor health and I'm not sure if he is still around. If you want to know the milimeter by milimeter history of Farlowe amps speak to Cliffyboy on Pinkfish.

Thanks for the pics, Sov.
In 2012 I heard the XVI mono's at a chaps house. The sheer dynamics and bass was just simply awesome. But at the same time they are utterly revealing sounding amps. Perhaps a bit too revealing for my personal liking if I'm being honest!
I'm guessing those 2 transformers inside that IVD are 500va?

Nice pics, Sov. Great to see the IX again. I love those gold caps too. My amps have those inside. Not seen them in other amps.

I guess I've posted just about every internal pic of my latest slightly flawed 3/4 combo, so here are a couple of external pics. what doesn't show too well is that they are an amazing "aubergine" shade. Gorgeous amps that will sit alongside my other 6/7/4 and my two exposure Tens until I have to make room. I reckon these will stay longest as long as I can fettle them. I love them.

I often like comparing different incarnations of the same product to see if and how they evolve. I had a passion once for trying every variant of the Linn Kan. I figured it would be good to do that by having a look inside my two Exposure X amps (which sound identical) to see if and how they differ. On the outside, the later amp had very faded lettering, whilst the earlier one is crisp and clear. I expected to see some differences inside too, but they appear identical. Such a beautifully made integrated that puts many others to shame IMO in terms of build and music making ability.

I'm getting another 6/7/4 later in the week.. I'll post some comparison pics of the preamps/PSUs and Power amps when I get the chance. It's nice to have a place to celebrate these great amps. They are still one of the most overlooked second hand gems out there IMHO.

I've had my XVII and XVIII since I was grouciously given them for my 21st birthday and up until i bought a second XVIII which was used for bi-amping duties. Personally as you likely know I'm a big Naim fan, but there is something about the John Farlowe era Exposure kit which I prefer overall. I understand that the XVII/XVIII were not only the first pre/power design with internal power supplies, but also the last amps designed by Mr Farlowe himself.
I have to admit to not being a fan of the post John Farlowe exposure kit as it has lost that sparkle, yes Tony is good but I'm afraid to me certainly he isn't quite up their with John.
Funnily I have just been thinking about whether I need to think about upgrading my amps and was looking at the Naim N-272 which is a pre amp/streamer combo but my biggest concern is whether the pre amp would be significantly better than the XVII and how it would pair with the XVIII power amp because I'd likely stuggle to get her indoors to agree to getting a NAP250/250.2 power amp at the same time. The other option is just to buy the NDX streamer and keep the Exposures... Decisions decisions.

I guess everyone is different and also Naim have changed their sound a bit too. The comparison I will always remember was when I had a Naim 72/HiCap/250 and an Exposure 6/7/Dual 4 at the same time. I was using a Naim CDI and SBLs, so you'd think the Naim amps would have home advantage.
They just sounded distorted, ragged and blurred in comparison, it was one of those rare moments when there were no "swings and roundabouts": The Exposure amps were just better in every way. Stronger, cleaner, better rhythm, bigger and generally far more accomplished.
I have never looked at Naim amps in the same way ever since. My very early 3 and 4 are significantly better than a 6/7/4 too. The Naim amps were lucky to avoid that comparison.

Hmmm very interesting, I was thinking I'd like a 252/250.2/Supercap but that is a whole lot of money in outlay... Maybe I should concentrate on the source first

Don't do it without listening to some serious opposition. Speak to MikeMusic about how he found better kit than Naim at a lower price.
