RIP John David ("JD") Souther, songwriter, singer, actor, and all around musical giant, aged 78 He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013, an institution that declared him “ a principal architect of the Southern California sound and a major influence on a generation of songwriters.” He was all that, and more. RIP Nick Gravenites, aged 85. A GoFundMe page to defray medical costs for Gravenites was set up in April, in part by longtime friend and colleague Barry Melton of Country Joe and the Fish, but not much else is known at this time. I knew his work from way back, but if you don't know him then the obit will give you a pretty good idea of how important a figure he was. OBIT

The obit is very interesting - I had no idea Kris was an Oxford Rhodes scholar, obviously a very intelligent man. Huge charisma, he will be missed.

Alex Salmond, former First Minister of Scotland and SNP leader, dies aged 69Mr Salmond, who led Scotland between 2007 and 2014, has reportedly died after delivering a speech in North Macedonia this morning. The former First Minister, who in recent years established the Alba Party campaigning for Scottish Independence, was the leader of the Scottish National Party on two separate occasions, from 1990 to 2000, and then 2004-2014 during which he lead devolved Scotland. Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar paid tribute to Mr Salmond. He said: “The sad news of Alex Salmond’s passing today will come as a shock to all who knew him in Scotland, across the UK and beyond. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time and on behalf of Scottish Labour I offer our sincere condolences to all who will be mourning his loss.” Mr Sarwar described the former First Minister as a ‘central figure’ of Scottish politics for three decades, whose impact on the country ‘can not be overstated’. Met him twice over the years, seemed like a decent guy. A big loss to Scottish politics and the Independence cause.

A very moving tribute from Bruce Dickinson to Paul whilst on stage in Minnesota. FROM 2023 Former Iron Maiden singer Paul Di'Anno has confirmed recent reports that his old band helped him pay for the major knee surgery and follow-up treatment he recently underwent ahead of his return to touring. Di'Anno, who fronted Iron Maiden from 1978-1981 and sung on the band's classic first two albums, Iron Maiden (1980) and Killers (1981), underwent successful knee surgery in Croatia in September following months of medical treatment - the latest in a years-long series of operations and health battles. Fans had raised over £11,000 via a crowdfunding campaign to contribute to Di'Anno's medical fees. Asked by Mexico outlet MB Live if it was true that Maiden had also helped finance Paul's treatment in Croatia, the singer replied ( as transcribed by Blabbermouth): " The last part of it they did, 'cause I ran of money. [ Laughs] It's been very expensive. 'Cause when I first got sick, I had to get medevaced from Argentina, which cost me a lot of money, 'cause I had to [ be transported] in a private medical plane and all that stuff back. When I arrived in England, I only had 45 minutes to live, with sepsis and that. So they pumped me full of antibiotics. I spent eight months in hospital. So the last bit of the treatment, the band was really cool — they paid for the last couple of months' worth of treatments, which was good. I'll be forever grateful for that." Di'Anno also confirmed that he and Maiden bassist/band leader Steve Harris stay in touch to chat about football and that he still gets royalties from his time with the band, adding: " Yeah. I still get royalties. I've just signed a deal with Sony Publishing, so they're getting all my royalties back into me now." Watch the full interview with MB Live below. CN211276, our resident Metal expert over at HFS tells me that not long before his death he was still performing, from a wheelchair, and a freind of his saw him this summer.

Met him twice over the years, seemed like a decent guy. A big loss to Scottish politics and the Independence cause. My wife met him on a visit to her workplace and took an instant dislike to him during the walkabout in his company. He was more interested in himself than the workforce or what he was there for.
