But gosh, I wish I had missed the last "episode" - very weak indeed at times, imo, embarassingly so. 7/10 overall, 3/10 for the finale. I'm not a Star Trek fan so have never really followed it , I watched Picard didn't know some of the past characters but found the whole thing too syrupy .

You could never accuse any ST show of being overly dark and edgy. However, Picard at least tries to go in that direction.
You want syrupy, try TNG (no, on reflection, don't)!

I think ST Enterprise had its "dark" moments, and is probably my favourite incarnation of the franchise. Scott Bakula was a good captain, and it did have Jolene Blalock.

Jolene Blalock was ludicrously hot and a complete distraction for me on that show. It felt more like watching a comedy trying to focus on the show and not just on her.

LOL - I had never heard of her till now. I can see the problem you had clearly though.

I think ST:Discovery is the darkest series so far.

Not a fan of ST Enterprise and I expected Scott Bakula and crew to nail it ST Discovery not as good as I hoped but I loved the conclusion Someone with a brain making a not at all obvious decision We gave up on ST Picard. Previously gave up on both Voyager and Deep Space Nine. Again expecting both to be nailed - and not Stand outs for me the original - fabulous for its time although now horribly dated and TNG Much like Nerdlist

The Original Series remains the best - and remember that many episodes were written by proper SF authors. DS9 was dreadful.

'For Sama' - an astounding documentary film & love story during the Syrian uprising. Horiffic and uplifting in equal measure, highly recommended. www.channel4.com/programmes/for-sama

At Eternity's Gate (2018) I found this film very moving - it tries to take you into the mind of Vincent Van Gogh and to give you an insight into how he still tried to keep his Christian faith alive in his paintings. Clever visual devices from the director and a very sensitive performance from the excellent Willem Dafoe. Available on Netflix.

The Nightingale (Netflix) , brutally graphic , not a great part of history for that continent . 8/10

Yes that does look like very challenging viewing but have added it to my Netflix list.
I'd also like to see the director's (Jennifer Kent) previous film The Babadook which is meant to be excellent.

Last night I watched Alien Covenant.
Of course Ridley is just 'treading water' with these recent films but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. It is visually beautiful as you would expect, cracking sets and locations; the gore and action mostly delivers. Would be one to enjoy on a big screen. One thing it did possibly miss is a really charismatic lead but to be fair it was written as more of an ensemble piece.

The Babadook (2014)
I was expecting a bit more from this directorial debut film based on reputation. It's efficient enough in slowly building to a bang crash wallop finale but never becomes too scary because we've seen most of the visual devices before in other films. And yes, it's set in a house, again. However, for the 99p Amazon rental you can consider it fair VFM ... LOL.

Ad Astra
I actually did like it. It's a bit grueling to get through, but the way it's shot, or edited did work for me and i did believe in brad Pitt's performance. Tbh I've always liked Brad Pitt but have felt in a number of his more recent roles it was hard to forget that it's Brad Pitt because of some goofy smirk I always seem to detect on him lately. His performance here though seemed very genuine and real like he was fully invested on his character.
Pretty good sci-fi I thought
