Finished watching the director's cut of Das Boot last night. Simply one of the greatest films ever made. Agreed 100% Seen it twice so far. Not the director's cut though

We have been watching Cars, Cars 2 and Cars 3 recently with Leo and they a good laugh. I like the way in which they have been cleverly pitched so that they can be enjoyable for children and adults, which is something that cannot be said for the drivel that is the new Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends TV series!

I watched 'Taxi' (1998) again last night. I'm not normally a fan of the 'action comedy' genre but this cult classic French film produced by Luc Besson has great action and is actually funny. The superb car shots were filmed in Marseille under the direction of former car commercials director Gerard Pires, and it really shows in the way he handles the action so confidently. In fact, it's worth watching just for the iconic opening sequence featuring a moped being handled like a Ducati. It also has a very cool French hip-hop soundtrack and was such a hit at the time there were actually another four sequels - I've seen 2 + 3 but sadly not a patch on the original.

We went to see Midway last night. It told the story well, but it's typical Hollywood blockbuster special effects (not hyper-real like Saving Private Ryan) and gets either gung-ho heroic or sentimentally slushy in the personal scenes. Enjoyable but not really up there with great war films.

A friend and ! watched, "Inside LLewyn Davis" again the other night, which we enjoyed. In the adverts at the beginning was a trailer for, "The Double" by (and starring) Richard Ayoade which was so intriguing that I immediately ordered the DVD. What a bizarre, but fascinating film.

I'm just having a look at the cast of "The Double" and there are a couple of what I assume are cameos that pique my interest: J Mascis as Janitor, Chris O'Dowd as Nurse, and Christopher Morris as Official. There are a few other familiar faces in the main cast too. £1.84 + £1.26 Delivery for a Used-Very Good Blu-ray on Amazon at the moment.

Last night my son wanted to watch Beverly Hills Cop so I duly obliged - the plot, what little there is, is so mundane but Eddie Murphy makes the whole thing so watchable and fun.

I watched Excalibur tonight, a favourite film of my youth. It's really made for the cinema but still great to see it again after many years. Great cast.

I watched Ridley Scott's The Counsellor again with Ruth. What an outstanding film, on a level with Sicario in depicting Mexican cartels.
I can't understand the poor reviews. They're all wrong!

I was really looking forward to the forthcoming Star Trek film "Picard" having seen trailers shown on Facebook - but last night discovered that it's not a film at all but a web televison series. So, how do I get to see it if I don't subscribe to the appropriate service? Is it even possible? Are there usually (gasps in horror and revulsion) pirate versions of this type of thing that become available on DVD?
