John Wick 3. Don't bother. Utter mindless violent dreck. IMDB forced me to give it 1/10. Upon reflection, I need to complain. It deserves 0.5/10*. * 0.5 because it is admittedly better than Hercules in New York.

I haven't seen John Wick 3 and wasn't going to bother, because I agree that John Wick 2 was pretty average. It is a shame when the sequels are so bad following good initial films.

I'm sure you'll all be thrilled to learn that "John Wick: Chapter 4" is set for release on May 21, 2021.

Lone Survivor - superbly made film telling the true story of a four man Navy SEAL mission against a Taliban commander. Reputed to be a very realistic depiction of combat - very gritty, gruelling story, also with some beautiful photography. Not without a touch of Hollywood but still it's well worth watching. It's staggering what kind of punishment these guys can take but still keep going.

I watched "Ghost Stories" last night. It was billed as the "best British horror for years," which it probably wasn't. Paul Whitehouse sounded far too much like one of his comedy creations, Martin Freeman was Martin Freeman, and a huge chunk of the "horror" simply relied on jump-scares until the whole thing reached a very twisty and convoluted denouement. Having said that some of the jump scares were bloody good, but ultimately they were not enough to carry the whole film.

Sicario 2. As gripping and unsettling as the original, a very gritty portrayal by all the actors and an outstanding performance by Isabela Moner as the kidnapped daughter of a cartel king. If you didn't want to go to Mexico before, this will only reaffirm your conviction. Superb.

It's staggering what kind of punishment these guys can take but still keep going. The big thing that spoiled the whole film for me was the fact that they sat above the Taliban stronghold in full view of the sun, surely if you're going to spy on something/someone you have the sun at your back looking out of the shadows. Once that happened early on, I just picked holes in it the whole way through. Even for a true story I thought it could have been better done, the director is usually reliable but thid time Peter could have done better 😉

It deserves 0.5/10*. * 0.5 because it is admittedly better than Hercules in New York. It was family entertainment; priceless. Wife and daughters. Not much artistic merit to it. Critical acclaim would be low. And I don't disagree. But still enjoyed it.

I think the trick is (or in my case it probably is) watching a film with no expectations, and knowing that sometimes mindless violence coupled with no discernible plot to distract one from it can be just what is required. Sometimes it's nice just to be entertained without having to work out why one is being entertained. Obviously many zero-plot films fall outside even these loose parameters, and any comedy aimed at an audience below the age of 30 is usually exempt, but there is a place for mindless entertainment in my world.

It needs to have a story for me to enjoy it. The two most recent films I've watched are John Wick 3 and Sicario 2. They are both exceedingly violent.
JW3 gets 1/10 because the 'story' is infantile, the action totally unbelievable, the violence completely gratuitous. I stopped watching it 2/3 of the way through because I simply couldn't care less what the outcome was going to be.
S2 (9/10) had me riveted because the story was completely gripping, entirely believable (except maybe being executed in the mouth rather than the head, but the boy was young) and I cared about the girl's survival.

It's chalk and cheese - difficult to compare the two - the Wick series is 'comic strip' and highly stylised / choreographed violence - it doesn't pretend to be rooted in any kind of reality. Still not seen part 3 - I thought the first was excellent, the second was good but not quite as compelling as the story isn't as fresh.
Still not seen Sicario 2, these films, whilst fiction (as far as I know) are trying to present an authentic account of what the situation is like with the cartels and how difficult to it to get at them.

How about a film like The Raid?
Endless violence, little plot, simple premise but I couldnt look away.
I think the director and his pacing and dialogue and my hope that they would escape their situation took a movie with very little story and made it unforgettable, even though I wouldn't recommend to most people unless they can enjoy 2 hours of top notch drivel.
