Watched NOPE last evening with 5 other people in a suitably wonderful 18C 45 seater cinema, it promised so much but in the end was predicable, enteraining at times. Shame really as "get out" was a great film another Jorden Peele effort 6.5/10 max

I enjoyed BlacKkKlansman, and Us and Get Out to a lesser degree. I'll still give "Nope," a shot at some stage though.

Unlike a lot of recent reviews, I rather liked No Time to Die. I thought it was a decent story and a fitting end to this Bond. The action was good but there was some humanity included, too, which I don't mind at all.

Pitch Black. It's been a treat watching this again. A rare SF horror that does everything well. It has its own style, from the superb crash at the beginning to the seared brightness of the planet and the scary bat-like creatures. Low budget, really well made. On Prime.

A trailer for a new cult classic in the making (or a huge bucket of arse-gravy).

I might try Tenet but really dislike films that I can't understand for whatever reason. Nolan is a very good director - Memento, Insomnia and Dunkirk were superb but I found Inception very annoying as I struggled to follow it ... Not really into the high tech, futuristic and FX laden films.

Xanadu (1980) You might think I have placed this Olivia Newton John movie in the wrong category. However, it is still a remarkable film that should be seen. The concept is appalling - 1940's nostalgic musical meets 1980's day glo roller disco with a soppy love story thrown in. The execution is laden with VFX that look like they were done by a primary school boy on his Atari computer. The mainly ELO soundtrack is er, not great. It is all so compellingly bad and dated, it somehow holds my attention to wonder at its unrelentingly OTT 80s iconography and, the lovely Olivia. www.theguardian.com/film/2020/aug/08/xanadu-olivia-newton-john-musical-flop-1980

Last night we watched The Evil Dead with the lights off. It's one of a number of horror classics available on BBC iPlayer.
I was shocked to see how old it is - 1981! Of course it's not quite as scary as it used to be - the prosthetics aren't exactly state of the art but that tree assault scene is still immensely powerful and disturbing. And I did get one proper jump scare. The way Sam Raimi builds up suspense and atmosphere on a shoestring budget of $375k is inspired, as is the sound design which is so compelling. The camera work traveling through the woods is iconic now - not sure if anyone had done that in such a way previously.
It needs to still be seen as one of the most influential horror movies of all time and let's not forget the media carnage and outrage it caused at the time.

Agreed, it was very well done and a few small ideas (the sign suddenly stopping at the beginning, the tape recording, the camera through the forest, the camera through the house at the end) really have great impact.

Did you guys ever hear how they got that shot with the camera racing through the woods? Google it.
