Vienna 1906: a fine setting for a drama. It’s a gilded age, full of wealth and culture, but also the city of Sigmund Freud, who’s busy probing the underside of the psyche. The catch is, what plays out against that setting in this grand European co-production, feels a little like a poor man’s Sherlock – not a bad thing but not groundbreaking, either.

Our hero is young Dr Max Liebermann, a disciple of Freud. Max is assigned to observe policework and he forms an unlikely bond with heavy-set detective Oskar Rheinhardt, as they investigate the murder of a beautiful medium.

Max’s gift is to use his psychoanalytic insights to read people and clues that escape the blundering Vienna police – who naturally want quick results but are appalled when suspects turn out to be socially well connected.

The central pairing works well and Matthew Beard does a fine job as Max, but the lack of proper female characters feels glaring. Why are all the women in Vienna depicted as dull, sex workers or – in the parlance of the time – hysterical?
