We've finally started watching Breaking Bad, courtesy of New channel Spike on Freesat. Quite entertaining but I think the edge has probably been taken off of it for me after all of the hype surrounding it. No Offence started last night, on C4. It's written by Paul Abbott who also wrote Shameless and has gone on our "must watch" list immediately. We both love black humour, and this has it in abundance. The scene in the mortuary was a minor classic. I'll say no more to avoid spoilers. Liking No Offence so far, although a little slower than I expected.

Well I've successfully worked my way through seasons one, two and three of Homeland. Have to say, utterly enjoyed it. Slightly lost its way in season three and I'm hoping that isn't a sign of things to come in season four. Slightly frustrating that despite paying for Amazon Prime and Netflix you still have to pay for season four, but I suppose they have to make money on DVDs etc as well. Hope it isn't too long before it is on Netflix. Has anybody seen season four yet? I keep reading mixed reviews.

Hah! If I could keep up with The West Wing and The Newsroom rapid-fire dialogue, not to mention the True Detective unintelligible drawl, I'll probably survive.

Another word for Banshee, series 3 has started and I've just seen ep.2. It's bloody superb in a guilty pleasure sort of way. If you're looking for something different, I urge you to try it. Start from the beginning, though.

Browsing through BBC iPlayer yesterday evening I stumbled across the two part BBC TV adaptation of Iain M Banks' novel Stonemouth. I am ashamed to admit I own not a single copy of Banks' work, moreover, whenever I discuss my taste in literature with like-minded individuals it's a given that Ian M Banks' name will pop up somewhere during the conversation, and always in a positive light, so I've really no ready excuse as to why I have not read him. Worse... It wasn't the esteemed authors moniker which drew me in but rather that of Peter Mullen, whose acting prowess impressed me mightily in Jane Campion's Top Of The Lake, another BBC drama adaptation. Anyway. let's get down to the nitty-griity, what did I think of it?
I suppose the most accurate way for me to describe my feelings towards Stonemouth hark back to a comment which would appear regularly on my old school reports; "Good work but could do better". It's certainly no fault of the cast as their interpretation of the script is excellent, there's some very good acting on show here from all concerned. The over-riding problem for me is that the pace is all wrong, more so in the final part, which comes over as a bit 'rushed', as if the crew were desperately attempting to tie up all the lose ends in the allotted time.
I suspect those who have read the novel will be deeply critical of the BBC adaptation and may possibly feel, as I do, that this project deserved far more screen time to enable it to fulfill its potential. Never-the-less it has inspired me enough to want to order a copy of the book, which probably has more to do with the fractional essence of Mr Banks' writing style that manages to survive the trip through the BBC's somewhat clogged filter.

Thanks for that, Dave. I'm a big Banks fan and have read every one of his books. I didn't know about the BBC production so will try to find it tonight.
EDIT: by the way, it's "Stonemouth".

EDIT: by the way, it's "Stonemouth". Sorted... Hadn't realised I'd written Stonehouse until you pointed it out Martin, thanks. Incidentally Stonehouse is a big old manor house not far from where I live... Brainfart moment... lol

Thanks again, Dave, I thoroughly enjoyed the TV dramatization of Stonemouth. It was pretty well done and I liked that she was even more feisty than in the book. I wonder what town that is, on the banks of the Forth, used to portray 'Stonemouth'? North Berwick?
Is anyone watching Banshee? I've just watched S3 EP3 and it's the most incredible episode I think I've ever seen. Unbelievable!

Not usually troubled too much by what's on TV, I'm spitting that our machine failed to record all but two episodes of Breaking Bad while we were away. The Channel 5 catch up service will only allow you to watch the last 6 days worth, so I'm going to have to scratch around to find the missing bits elsewhere.

All five series of Breaking Bad are available in HD on Netflix chaps. The company have a one month trial offer running just now so you could always create an account to take advantage of it then bin it later. The final season is a humdinger btw

I just finished watching S2 Ep10. Rabbit is dead finally! I was a bit upset when Job was hit by a car, thinking he was dead, but I shouldn't have worried. What a great character!
