I've a feeling we are in for a harsh winter. That is what I am expecting and why I put cold weather tyres on already. Though round town fuel consumption has gone from mid 40's to 40 and the engine seems underpowered dragging all this resistance around, but on the bright side I can corner like an F1 car, oh and the ride is smoother and quieter.
If you have a Jag with 17" wheels I doubt even cold weather tyres will keep it on the road then the snow hits. All these wide low profile tyred cars are the first ones that need to be pushed asside into the hedgerows to get out of the way of the people driving cars appropriate for the conditions. The biggest menace in the snow is the Nissan Micra, not on the basis of what the car is but because of the nut behind the wheel. But thankfully they are mostly only on the road for two hours a week going to the garden centre at 20 mph with a trail of cars in their wake.

I do my best to keep up with my 19" low profiles To be honest, it's much more about the idiot drivers in rear wheel drive cars who shouldn't have one because they are clueless. The number of Mercs I've seen where the driver sticks it in 'D' and spins the wheels endlessly, wondering why they're going nowhere, is frankly amazing. Why not drive something they might be able to handle, like a front wheel drive Corsa?
I'm pleased to say that I got through that terrible blizzard on the M25 a couple of years ago in my BMW while even toy four-wheel-drives had got themselves stuck.

There's the thing, most people with 4 wheel drives (toy or 'real') seem to think they're magic and will automatically get them out of trouble. I've seen plenty of FWD's plough into hedges on slippery roads because their drivers mistakenly think FWD will make them go round corners faster. In reality it's the driver of course who makes the real difference.

I bought the 17" rims on ebay for the summer. The car came with 16" with 205/55/16's, so should be fine with winter tyres. Jags are designed for comfort as much as performance. :-) It also has permanent 4 wheel drive using a viscous coupling system, so whilst it doesn't have the clearance of a proper 4x4, it is a proper 4wd system, lacking omly diff locks, which is largely negated by the use of the viscous coupling system anyway.

Refined, as you would expect. Doesn't quite have the charisma of the Alfa though, and I'm not sure the build quality is as good as the Alfa either. It is the cheapest Jag though, I'd expect that to get better as you go up the range.

Last time we were gridlocked with snow I was going down the right hand lane at 40mph on the way to Sunderland in my L200 with cold weather tyres, and an idiot in the left hand lane queue of idiots rang the number on the back to complain about my driving
Why do I call them idiots? for going onto the road incorrectly equipped and causing a gridlock. Artic Truck drivers are the biggest idiots on days like that. They should no way be on the roads. but they aren't as bad as the Nissan Micra class of driver who quite honestly shouldn't be on the roads in any conditions.
While I am having a moan, far too many people who are no longer safe to drive are hanging onto their licenses and causing a danger to other road users!

I nearly got into a road-rage incident when an idiot purposely blocked me from overtaking on the A1, presumably on the basis that if he couldn't drive at more than 20mph in the snow, then nobody else should. Anyone wants to go faster than me on snow is welcome They are either stupid or know what they are doing. Remember seeing Range Rover (big surprise) in a ditch on my way home. No other 2WD cars in any ditches Give some people the tools and they still can't use them

X Type 3.0 V6 SE, permanent AWD, 60/40 split to the rear wheels, with viscous coupling system. Not saying build is poor, it isn't, just the Alfa was a very solid car. Later X Types moved away from the viscous coupling system, more robust but actually a poorer system.

It has some Mondeo parts, but only about 15%, the rest is Jaguar. AWD was only standard on the petrol models, optional on the diesels I believe.
If you are considering one, check the sills carefully!
These are prone to having their drain holes crushed by injudicious use of the jack, which means they fill up with water and rot. Otherwise a pretty solid car though.
