2021-05 Cumulative update... Version 20H2 KB5003173 on mine Installed 13/05/21
Ah. At last, same details on the boss's laptop now - after being told it was "Pending"
These two laptops work in different ways. Anyway maybe an update will help.
Nearly always found at work when I used another PC that it needed updates. Spent a lot of my life updating PCs

It looks like updates to W10 version 21H1 are coming through.
Jeans laptop is updating now, but my laptop has not been offered it yet. I'll try my PCs later.

Microsoft just offered me a major update. Microsoft's major update failed. Microsoft suggested I run Chkdsk, which failed. Microsoft suggested I try it from safe mode and suggested a procedure to get there. I can't talk to Microsoft any more on my PC because not only would it not boot into safe mode, it's refusing to boot into any bloody mode now, because it's still set to boot into safe mode, which it's refusing to do...

What is it with you and updates, Paul?
Reminds me of me and Volumio!

Bloody Windoze is teasing me now. "I'll fire up that W10 laptop I bought," I thought. My plan being to go back to basics and download the Windoze media tool and bung a W10 recovery on a USB stick.
Oh no, that would be far too easy. "You can't do anything, son, kick back and enjoy the updates why don't you. 20H2 you say? No problemo. Here it is..."
Meanwhile the brick across the room that used to be a PC just sits there, glowering at me.

See, now this is why I hate Windoze, it's completely illogical. All I'd done is to set the PC to boot into safe mode - no more, no less - and it bricked. I tried various things to get it going agian - no dice. I unplugged the PC from the mains and plugged it back in. Desperate much? - No change (Don't even ask me why, but) I unplugged the monitor from the mains and plugged it back in again. The computer booted to POST. I set it to boot to the last known good config, and it booted to bios. Rebooted the machine and it booted into Safe Mode. Removed the "boot to safe mode" setting in msconfig and rebooted again. The computer booted normally to W10, and here I am.

Ground lockout. Seen it a good few times. Unplugging PC, monitor and anything else connected to it is always worth a try.
Not really Windows' fault!
Glad it's sorted.

Sounds a little like what happens when I plug in the usb cable from my printer..my monitor goes black for a couple of seconds. Everything is plugged into the same mains socket so the PD shouldn’t vary.

Situation normal. Windoze is installing Definition Updates, but failing Feature and Quality Updates, so even though it's now offering me 20H2 it refuses to update.
Interestingly, although I get an onscreen message telling me I need to reboot to finish installing an update - and this is totally unbidden, I've done nothing, and requested nothing - and after rebooting Windows loads normally, with no error messages. The "Windows Update" dialogue actually informs me that I'm "up to date," and tells me when I last checked. It's only when I bring up the "View Update History" dialogue that there is any indication that it's failed.
Asking it to check again then gives me the message that there are updates available, and the outstanding updates download. Windoze then attempts to install them, including 20H2.
And they fail over again. My version is still 1909.

But seriously, and trying to be helpful, isn't the issues with the various feature updates you've had trouble with indicative that it's a driver that's at fault here? I know you have a lot of accessories for music connected to the PC. Would it be better to strip it down to a vanilla machine and then try a feature update again? Then add the peripherals back in?
Just a thought.

No, I don't think it's a driver problem, it's more like the Windoze installation itself is corrupted, but it won't allow me to test anything, it just throws up an error code. As I said earlier, it won't even allow me to run chkdsk.

As I said earlier, it won't even allow me to run chkdsk.Sorry, I missed that. Does it allow you to run an offline chkdsk on the next boot? What about sfc /scannow ? Try them also by restarting into the console before Windows starts.
