Well, to be fair, the facilities are still there. What I don't like is the low-level nannying, like hiding icons that I want to see.
Leave my bloody system tray alone - if I don't want something showing there, I'll stop it!

My PC appears to have committed hara-kiri (I'm currently on the Chromebook) while I was cooking dinner. It's been a bit flaky lately so I decided to set up a recovery drive. Problem #1, it wouldn't allow me to reload/reinstall Windoze. Problem #2, I could not enter safe mode, I couldn't even access the BIOS. It also started crashing updates, sfc /SCANNOW refused to work as did every other cleanup and recovery method I know.
In the meantime the NVIDIA control panel was throwing up an error, so I reinstalled the latest drivers. It was rebooting when I left the room, and on coming back the machine appeared to have rebooted, but there is no signal to the display. I've currently got an expensive brick plugged into the mains.
I am currently at a loss, not a feeling I'm used to regarding my PC. I think I need to go away and think about this, but at the moment I have no way into the machine.

Flaky SSD or, even worse, flaky motherboard? Is it an Nvidia mobo or were you referring to a graphics card? Worth reseating the RAM?

Flaky SSD or, even worse, flaky motherboard? Is it an Nvidia mobo or were you referring to a graphics card? Worth reseating the RAM? I'll probably take it apart and shake it tomorrow. NVIDIA graphics card, btw. It makes fault-finding a bit awkward when you've got no graphics. My first thought is reboot it without the graphics card, and then reboot again with the card reinstalled to see if Windoze will recognise it and offer up some sort of minimal graphics capability.

Does the mobo not have any graphics built-in? That would be my first test - remove the graphics card, reduce to a minimum, also unplug any peripherals.

3-2-1 and we're back in the room. There was no way I could go to bed without sussing the graphics problem out, and what I said I'd try worked. Updates are still failing and I can't get into safe mode, or run sfc /SCANNOW etc. but at least now I can SEE that they're not working.

What's the status on your computer, Paul?

What's the status on your computer, Paul? Well, the graphics problem seems to be sorted... except... Often, when I boot the machine into Windoze I get a message that the NVIDIA control panel is missing, so I click on the Windoze Store icon on my task bar (it's the only place you can get the control panel now???) and the icon vanishes, I click on "Start" to re-add the icon and that causes Windoze to report that my Task Bar is damaged and asks me to log out, which I do. I then log back in and lo-and-behold, everything's fixed except the missing icon, which I can add successfully now. Updates are failing with an Error 0x800705aa message, received internet wisdom to cure such errors is, to begin with, run sfc /SCANNOW from an elevated command prompt, which fails with the message " Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation". Other than that it seems fine. [EDIT] Have a chuckle at this...

That sounds like it's level 15 buggerated (=clusterf*cked)
Wipe and reinstall!
EDIT: you sure Mike hasn't been round for a cuppa?

Just buy one of these, it's served me well (and goes like the proverbial shit...) You do get to put the M.2 NVMe SSD and RAM inside it

Better late than never.
Jeans laptop is actually updating to version 20H2.
So nearly a year for the May 2020 update.

I guess a vendor must have finally made a compatible driver for that machine.

I spoke too soon.
After downloading, and then installing, it's now undoing changes made to the computer.
GRRRRRRRRRR.
Seemingly the 1909 version is dead now, and the update was a Microsoft suggestion.
PS
Tomorrow I will try the laptop hard drive in my spare PC, which I know has previously updated to 20H2.

Well, a bit of progress.
The 20H2 update just would not load, so I left it a day or so and tried again. This time I was offered a 1909 update, which again would not load.
Anyway, I did some research and found some info about DLL files being the culprit. I ran some files I found on a web site to do something to DLL files and after that the 1909 updates were downloaded and installed.
Now waiting for another invitation to download 20H2.

Finally, after god knows how many hours of pratting around, often not really understanding what I was doing, I've finally got Jeans laptop up and running with W10 version 20H2.

In Windows Update, it will offer you a version update if it sees a compatible machine.
Just go to Settings | Update & Security.
