Hehe, After a couple of days I was offered to update to a new build - had a long version number. I assumed it was the Slow update and accepted. That basically bricked the phone. After the update and data phase it just sat cycling between the MS start logo, a buzz and a dull white screen! Over and over. No amount of batt off or hard reset via the buttons made any difference.
I used the MS Device Recovery SW to restore the phone to the last proper release - 8.1 update 2. All works apart from Messenger of course! But.. basic things like the keyboard size, Swype function etc are so much better on 8.1 than the W10 branch they made for the 640. I'm staying on 8.1 now without Messenge until I go Nokia 3,5 or whatever or other Android device. I'll have to keep in touch with overseas family, who are only on Messenger on the Laptop. No more photo updates from me as they happen!
The Messenger turn off on 8.1 (to a smaller extent) and the Onedrive 16GB to 5GB downgrade, done in that underhand way last year have burn bridges I'm afraid.

Shame, Steve. I'll stick with Windows 10 Mobile as I really do like the OS and the forthcoming ARM versions look pretty impressive. The more iPhone dweebs try to get me to like them (I cannot stand iOS), the more resistant I become. Old codger!

Yes it's a shame. It seems they have also pulled Tapatalk off W8.1 phone store.
All a bit too early as the usability of the device is being reduced and reduced while customers are still within contract periods.
I understand they want to shuffle us off 8.1 and onto new devices. The problem is they will just lose W phone customers full stop by that strategy I think.
So I will have to have another go at W10 on phone, but on the 640 Swype / predictive text is a lot worse.

All I can say is that the release build is pretty stable and I've had no oddities yet.

I bit bullet having got w8.1 a working phone, updated the least risky W10. 10586.107?? It retains the w8.1 keyboard and Swype seems okay. Messenger works allows pic uploads. I can't find tapatalk though. I've got fav web web pages pinned start now. I'm much happier about it. Will stay away from the fast track I did read the blurb so accept risk. The phone recovery tool is great.

Tapatalk seems to have disappeared from the store as I tried to add it to my tablet yesterday. My phone has it and I'm keeping it as it works well.

The current stable release is 15063.297 (Creator's), by the way.

Looks like I will get to that very build eventually. First it auto installed 14393.1066! It's made all the fonts in Edge super large Now the same build you have is downloaded and when I have more than 40% batt will be installed.. Yep all done and I've opted out. Now I have Messenger again, but lost Tapatalk. You win some you lose some..

14393 is Anniversary, so it went through the release levels.
Tapatalk is a Store problem. Haven't found out why, yet. WhatsApp works well, by the way. So does TU (phone/text over wi-fi) if you have an O2 account.

Ah that explains the odd version numbering. I was worried it was going back to an old unstable build, but let it take its course. Yes, be great if tapatalk was resolved. At least TAS is Mobile browser friendly, unlike some other sites. AoS is not for example. Talktennis is Other than that, the creators build seems fine. Everything that was all over the place before works Marie's 640 that also had the same not booting up OS prob, and needed to back to 8.1, is still on 10586.107 with no sign of wanting to go anniversary and then Creator. I'll let it do its thing and see.

I've raised a ticket with Tapatalk. Seems a lot of people have noticed their sudden disappearance from the Windows Store.

Interesting. Hope its a mistake.
It seems Eurosport player has gone now too. Replaced by a useless news feed! Used to be able to follow live RV feeds on the phone.
The apps / eco system will be the nail in coffin for MS's half hearted phones attempt of course. It seems to me they have already made up their mind to call it quits. More and more things starting disappearing. Slippery slope.

Don't despair, it's just a transition while apps are converted to UWP for all versions of Windows 10. It doesn't help that Silverlight is being phased out, too.
Windows 10 S (Store only apps) will help a great deal. So will Fluid Design.

Response from Tapatalk:
"It's no longer supported and is sunset"
...followed by thread locked. Nice.
