As a small mitigation for the NHS, upgrading their total systems from XP would be a huge investment in time and money, not to mention the disruption. HOWEVER - now the disruption has happened, maybe now is also the best time to do this.. If they had a sensible programme of updating and budgeted for normal maintenance - like you would an ambulance vehicle or a life support machine there would not be the need for a massive update / migration programme. Little and often and in a controlled way. It must be horrible to be an IT guy in a workplace that just ignores fundamentals like that!

It wouldn't have made much if any difference if they had those in place. The problem was identified on the 6th of May. Updates started showing up this week on my system. Given the amount of computer systems in the NHS, it would take ages to update each one of them manually. I doubt that they are set for auto update.

That's 4 generations behind and W10 has been around for over a year now! 5 generations: Windows XP Windows Vista Windows 7 Windows 8 Windows 8.1 Windows 10 (consisting of RTM 1511, Anniversary 1607, Creators 1703)

You can't count Vista and 8.0

Vista was pants. 8 was ok, but required an adjustable mindset. Of course, flexibility is not something available to many users.

I forgot about Vista. It was on one of our daughters and my parents desktops. Dreadful indeed.
8 np for me

I'd like to back further to Desqview. Ran multiple DOS packages fine on a 286.
Desqview X would have been my favourite if I was clever enough to get it going

Mix a mammoth organisation with a huge consultant, add in Guvmunt insisting on money being saved and we have all of that. My mate Andy does this sort of thing. He would have sorted them out

Yes, that project was a disaster. No doubt over-ambitious and suffered from scope creep. There was a similar mega project run by the BBC (central archival, retrieval and editing of any footage anywhere) that was abandoned after spending a lot of licence fee money, and another one involving schools merging all pupil data into one almighty central register that also collapsed.
Keep it small, keep the goals in sight, never but never allow the idiot-that-nobody-wants to manage it and give the project some teeth to force things through. Oh, and have a champion on the board to help with the necessary buy-in.

I have every confidence in him. His methods are rather clever, Machiavellian even Could hardly be worse than the rubbish normally served up

I find that threatening the 'powers that be' with well-reasoned arguments as to why the funding is required, and the potential penalties if declined, usually gets the job done.
I wouldn't call it Machiavellian, it's just tough strategic management.

Latest Insider W10 update really sucks. Raw hanging with vibra on and keypress sound repeating over and over - very weird. Was while listening to Webradio and requiring batt off to stop. Not had that sort of thing since the early build testing I did working at Symbian! Not only that but the camera sits on Saving endlessly until you turn of the phone, then the pic is lost. I can't add pics from a folder in Messenger. Can't open docs, word or note any more - just exits the office app. Roll on the next update As an aside I've always had problems with TuneIn radio app and have the same with Radio.FM app on W8 & same on W10 with the 640. Just stops randomly after a few minutes and has to be restarted. BBC podcasts work okay but not streaming radio in browser. There is no app in store. I got an old Nokia 520 out and to use as a Radio / Spotify server and it never drops radio out, not after hours of play! Radio.FM is great for overseas channels - Swedish radio for instance. Long may the old shortwave remain irrelevant Fun and games.

That's why I came off the Insider Ring, Steve. I'm finding the latest release version 15063.297 pretty stable and it allowed me to install and activate my Barclays app again, which is useful.

Interesting. I needed the insider programme to get off 8.1 and to 10. Question is can I go back to a more stable version or wait until I get one that seems good and then leave?

You can just try stopping the Insider Program (in settings | updates) and it should install the stable version. If you don't like it, go back on the Insider ring again.

Yes, I've turned it down to slow. Let's see what that update is like.

The slow didn't do it for me. I had to turn Insider off completely, whereby 15063.297 was offered.
