So fiddly and so many updates, I'm beginning to think I should have stuck with Vista. Vista support ends soon. You really don't want to be stuck running an unsupported OS, there is far too much malware out there.

WARNING: not long to go now before the W10 free upgrade offer ends. I can't think of any reason to stick with W7 rather than upgrade to W10.

Me too. Others seem to be resistant to change.

It's odd how much resistance there is. Perhaps it is the bit of work it involves, the rumour machine saying W7 is better for gaming (I've def not going that on the racing sims I run), & there seems to be this belief that a new thing from MS must be out to get them in some way?!
Me I like new things and embrace the bit of work. New features and toys, better speeds and new look. I like retro things that are/were great, take my Vitavox S2's or JBL 2482s and 2220's. Still world class, but SW and OS's nonononono.
Okay if you are not networked and using your old programs to do same old same old, and happy then fine, but as Martin says security issues if networked would worry me.

The thing is, I'm still yet to see the downside. I must have upgraded north of 80 machines now at work, old and new. In all cases they run better afterwards. The core performance of W10 is excellent. Server 2016 is going to be just as good (same core).
All the internet bullshit about Microsoft spying on you is just that; the reality is that Microsoft, Apple and Google all collect stats and have done for a while. This is not the same as spying on you, it's done to target ads and marketing. Google actually reads your mail, but no-one seems to worry about having a gmail.com e-mail address. You can also turn a lot of it off if you're of a paranoid nature.
In this world of increasing Flash, HTML5, rich websites, bloated applications and more targeted malware, you just can't afford to fall behind.

What e' said Some of the nonsense the fuddy duddies on other hi-fi forums write about W10 is just pure nonsense, but people read it and believe it. They are also blaming it because of their inability to install it correctly, a workman and his tools eh? Ignorance is bliss they say.

Whilst it's possible that Win7 is better at running some OLD games that were deliberately optimized for it, it isn't and won't ever be better at running NEW games designed for DirectX 12 which the new generation of graphics cards are built for.

Windows 10 update 14367 has arrived on the fast track, for both desktop and phone. The beauty of this update (apart from being very close now to the impending W10 'Anniversary' update for all users) is that the Notifications area now receives all my phone notifications. I can also reply to text messages using Cortana and voice from the desktop.
I'm pleased that Microsoft have unified the versions and release dates, it shows that they continue to have faith in W10 Mobile as a platform. Meanwhile, Server 2016 is not far off from release, using W10 core in a third platform and then there's XBox using W10, too.

Are you sure you don't get a monthly stipend from Redmond Martin?

Something else I've discovered...If, like me, you use a 3rd party firewall and have Windows Firewall turned off your updates will not download/install. If that's not confusing enough for you, you can't install new fonts with the bloody thing turned off either. That took a while to figure out.

Are you sure you don't get a monthly stipend from Redmond Martin? Hah - we pay handsomely at work for our annual Microsoft OpenValue agreement. I'm just a corporate user who recognises business level greatness. Of course I'm a fan, why wouldn't I be?

I didn't know that (but I do know that non-activated Windows will not install updates). Not that it does any harm to keep the Windows firewall up, since it protects you from other internal networked machines. I force the firewall to be on in all client machines at work, as well as our having an external firewall, as you never know what some user may pick up on a laptop at home or elsewhere before bringing it back into the network.

I'm an adult and have no children. No need for games therefore.

It looks like 14393.x is going to be the RTM (Release to Manufacturing) candidate for Windows 10 Anniversary. 14393.3 came in yesterday to both desktop and phone and seems very stable. The new Edge browser add-ins like AdBlock Plus work very nicely. Continuum is superb and Cortana seems to be getting ever more useful. Text messaging integration on the desktop is wonderful.
Anticipated release date is 2nd August. However, you need to take advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10 before then, if you still haven't. I did one yesterday for a friend on an old Lenovo N200 laptop and it went through perfectly.

Well, 1607 (Anniversary or 14393.10) is available now and we've been putting it on all our work machines. Smooth, stable and brilliant. Mobile is coming to phone in a couple more weeks.
That is all!
