Can you get a virtual window in W10, like in W7 ? Where I run a DOS database If you mean cmd (command prompt) Mike then yes, unlikely Microsoft would ever remove that

Thought that was gone in W8 ! Nope, still in W10 as well as 8 - like anything in Windows, numerous ways to find it . . . simples. Search > cmd or Run > cmd are about the easiest. It's not going away Mike.

So far on both the desktop and laptop I have found nothing which is incompatible. What about you Martin, have you discovered any conflicts yet? I'm pretty much the same, Tim, W10 seems only to have upside. All of my applications run fine and bloody fast on my 6-core home machine with Samsung 840 Evo SSD. Seriously shit-hot, that is. Photoshop is always a good test of a computer's mettle.
On a fairly standard test laptop at work, it runs as fast or faster than W8.1, which is saying something.

Don't get your hopes up, Mike. The Command window won't run 16-bit code. You're expecting obsolete DOS software dating back to before W95 to still run on a modern OS, which is a bit of a stretch!
There are virtual machines you can run for that, I think I've suggested some before.

DOSBox is worth a look Mike - it can be a bit fiddly to set up, but works nicely once that's done. I use it for playing old DOS games.

Seconded. A proper DOS virtual machine under W8.1 or W10 is the way to go. Then you still have a proper computer 'in front of the scenes'.

I don't know about you but I'm on W8.1 on several devices including the phone, previously on W8. W9 definitely went missing in action, though.
It could be summarised as: more clever shit, faster access!

I am still very pleased I was directed to w10 by this thread. Have had occasional upgrades on this were a fool up. But they correct it in a few days. On average much better than any other Microsoft product my ignorant life has experienced.
I will just add that I had some qdos points from work which added up to an iPod touch air II and a SIM card slot and it is better than w10 to my limited ignorant mind,s eye.

Story I heard was that Windows 9 was fast-forwarded to fix Windows 8 'problems' /shortcomings but they didn't want to admit to it so it became 8.1 to look like a minor update..

As well as running W10 on my main desktop PC at home, I've now upgraded my 8" Toshiba tablet as I needed to see how the non-media upgrade works. I can report that it works fine and putting W10 into tablet mode has given me a very serviceable 8" W10 experience. The Technical Preview is still a little rough in some places but every Microsoft update brings big improvements and it gets ever better.
I've decided to move wholly to a tablet at work since I currently use a desktop PC running W8.1 and my personal tablet running W8.1 RT. So I shall wait for the new Microsoft Surface Pro 4 tablets to be released in summer and will buy one plus a dock, to be used with my 24" monitor in extended screen mode. That should give me enough horsepower to perform all my server management duties, run SIMS reports (very demanding), and do normal work both at my desk and around the extended campus. It's about time I spend some capital budget on my own needs!
