Cancelled: The Audio Standard Bake Off - The ASBO 2024The forum is 10 years old in 2024 and the Management Team are pleased to announce our birthday party. Date: Saturday 21st September 2024 Venue: The Victory Hall, Farley Hill, RG7 1TR (near Reading) Time: 13:30 - 18:00 It's been a while since the last one, but The ASBO is back! It's an opportunity for us to get together, away from our computer screens, and prove we are real people. We will be putting together audio systems made up from members' own set-ups, ranging from the extremely cost effective to the aspirational. Guests may bring items of their own equipment and lots of music. There will be good sounds, good systems and good cheer as we meet to enjoy our common pursuit: the love of well reproduced music. Putting faces to names is always fun, too! The idea is a convivial gathering in order to try out system components and play music of every conceivable type according to taste. There are two rooms that we can use. The TAS Management Team are funding this event and hope to make it as successful as the last. We look forward to meeting old friends and new. Please let us know if you intend coming to help us with our numbers. See final post for latest information.

Ooh sounds very interesting.
I'm kinda wondering if it's too big a project to bring the 3/4 way Danley SH50 alike Synergy horns along.
You never know, by then I could have built their smaller brothers the SM60Fs. Would be even easier to transport.
I couldn't bring the tapped horn subs. Too big, too heavy. Would need to beg / borrow an active sub or two to fill out the lowest octave.
Are there several rooms? Varying sizes?
I'm streaming only really. Would that work? CD transport would also work but I haven't bought a CD in 10 + years🙂

Absolutely not, Steve. I would LOVE to hear them going in the hall. I'll bet others would, too.
There are two rooms, the hall and a smaller (but still quite large) room.
I'm bringing my 4G+ router for streaming, so there should be streamers and DACs available to try out.

I'll have to see if I can get future son-inlaw interested to come along and help load / unload🙂
I'll weigh the Danley's as are.. hopefully could manage with help - without taking the covers off and drivers out..
Would need something to stand them on. Dining room table sort of height, although Danley recommends getting them up high esp in bigger venues!
I'd use my 4 channel DAC/pre etc to drive the 3 or 4 amps.
I might even have a Trinnov by then. I'm researching the Altitude-16. They have 16 mono amps built in!
Of course, as I am, I have the amp for a beefy passive sub or two, so could be active subs or passives. If anyone has a sub or subs they could bring?
Rel would be ideal, I've read.

I hope to come down for ASBO…all the way from Cheshire, it’s very much area I used to frequent when working, staying at The Wellington Arms on the A33 by Stratfield Turgis. It’s in late sun holiday time for retirees but there’s a decent chance I’ll be around. I could bring my EWA pre/power amps or some other of Colin’s creations.

I've had a look at the hall video. Great size. Big for Hifi speakers. The SH50s will be right at home. Their directivity control is ideal for a long narrowish room Danley says. Placed with the rear trapezoidal side parallel to the walls there are minimal side wall reflections.
I reckon that a pair of step ladders would be great to get them up a bit higher. Also important in a larger room cutting down floor reflections.
The sub dilemma.. I'm looking at hiring a Danley TH118XL for the day. They might deliver and collect but the cost would rise considerably. Might by feasible if could find somewhere more local to Reading. I'm still looking.
The TH118 is the same tech solution as the tapped horns I have. Match made in heaven.
Fun and games..

That would be quite something if you could swing it, Steve.
I would love to hear those speakers.

I've been messing about with my tapped horn subs in prep for this event. As the SH50s play almost down to 50Hz. Only one tapped horn is needed. The sub 50Hz stuff is not directional. So I could just build one of these Tuned to do 70Hz to 20Hz. With Can be had 2nd hand too👍 Bridge my Cerwin Vega amp for ~1000W into 6ohm and drive it as hard as🙂 Would go from the workshop to Victory Hall, and then straight on eBay😂 At 762mm wide, fits in the car no problem. Would the SH50s also fit around it though? Hmm.. Measure twice, cut once. Will document further in the usual Horn build thread..
