I've just done a ton of Xmas present buying on Amazon (and wine.com for my sister). Every time I go into town I end up disappointed with shops not having what I want in stock, and the number of people drives me mad. I need a stop in Costa just to recover! Much better using Amazon.
It's always the hardest job working out what to get people and making sure I don't get them the same thing as last year. That's why I keep a log.
Bah, humbug!

On a positive note, we did get the Xmas tree up on Saturday.

The only two real "presents" I buy are for a cousin, and her daughter + girlfriend, they get Ninja kettles this year. Mum gets a variety of smelly stuff she likes and chocolate-based goodies (what does one buy for a 99-year-old in a nursing home?) and everyone else (my son & daughter-in-law and my three grandchildren, sister & brother-in-law, and their two kids) get Amazon gift cards of varying denominations. Amazon all the way. Job done.

(what does one buy for a 99-year-old in a nursing home?) A drum kit of course. The staff will thank you too!

We bought the tree on Saturday and it is currently standing in the attic where it is nice and cool. It will go up next week some time.
I have started making a gift for Ina and will need to ban her from the studio.
A few small gifts for friends have been bought and I just need a couple of small extras now, and to find somewhere with fresh Cranberries in stock.

I hate going out shopping and avoid it As for Christmas shopping and loads of people <shudder> Yup, trying to go anywhere this time of year is a nightmare, not just down the shops. I wish I could time jump the whole thing, everyone just goes bat shit crazy over two invisible men in the sky (God and santa) . . . I can't actually remember ever enjoying Christmas and I haven't put any sort of decorations up since the early 90s and that was only because my girlfriend threatened to withdraw certain privileges if I didn't! Rampant waste and excess consumerism at it's very worst . . . let's all dig another landfill shall we

I had all my Xmas shopping done last week. I actually enjoy putting a little time into thinking of gifts that might surprise and be enjoyed, it's all part of the experience I enjoy.
I must say that Winchester Christmas Market must have a very good PR team behind it. Supposedly the best in the country?? Well it's big in size but low on quality, the only thing I bought yesterday was a small bottle of rum for a present. Lovely setting around the Cathedral though. No comparison to the German markets, I'd really like to visit one of these in the next few years. I will have to make sure my son doesn't try to buy a suit of armour, he'd love that!
I'm looking forward to going to Temple Church next Sunday for one of their excellent carol services - I try not to miss these each year; then the family get-together at my brother's on Xmas Eve.

what does one buy for a 99-year-old in a nursing home? For a 90 year old not quite in a nursing home, one buys paperback novels. She loves them.

that was only because my girlfriend threatened to withdraw certain privileges if I didn't! I'm not allowed to be a grinch, either. This year I embraced it and helped to put the bloody thing up. It worked, there were more 'privileges'

So, are you owning up to possessing such a thing then, Martin?! Absolutely not owning up to owning one. Never. Owning up, that is.

Heretic! Are you trying to tell me Santa isn't real?! I know shocking idea isn't it!
Unfortunately my parents burst that bubble when I was 7 - they'd made such a fuss over the whole Christmas thing as we were living in Aden at the time, so it was hard to get into the Christmas spirit surrounded by desert and sand coloured arid mountains. Anyhoots, I caught them creeping into my bedroom in the middle of the night, bringing presents to put at the bottom of the bed. Once the lie was discovered it's never really been anything I can get excited about.
As I'm not religious I can't really get excited about the other aspect either.

Agreed, Paul. Seems like most people are celebrating some holiday or another this time of year so it's right to say "happy holidays" which could encompass them all.
Wow had a snowboarding trip planned with a lady to Killington Vermont or Sunday river in Maine (two huge resorts - 9 peaks at Sunday River and a 12 mile long trail at Killington) for the week directly after Christmas.
Spent $300 on 2 new tires after hitting a godzilla footprint crater pothole Saturday in my car at 2am.
Coupled with a health insurance renewal fee of $365 due December 23rd maybe that's it for the trip! Thanks life. I'm going into this holiday with low expectations so maybe it will at least exceed those.
