I just started Intermittent Fastening again I not done this for at least a year and had a few attempts over summer only to fail at it. For me the hardest part is the first few weeks. At present my body is crazing carbs I know this goes away in a week or so, but also know the feeling is quite compelling. With regards to fastening I usually do 18 hours fast and for the other 6 hours I allow myself 2 meals but I keep the carbs low. It is a extreme way to lose weight but I know it is the only diet that works for me. I know it will have other benefits to my health and sense of well-being.

Good luck with it, John.
I know the only way that's been successful for me is to have no targets and no anxiety. I'm just aware of keeping portion size small and allowing the weight to very slowly shed over time.

I find carbs so addictive that this is the only way that really works for me. What I need to do is find a better solution once I feel I have lost enough weight. I think we all have to find what works best for ourselves. I know my solution will be too radical for other people. What has to change is a better long-term solution Intermittent Fasting and low carbs is not easy to start and not an effective long-term solution (its bloody hard and I enjoy treats). When I have lost weight, I will need to consider a different strategy that is more sustainable.

I've cut out most refined carbs over the last 5 years, they made me ill. If you crave carbs then how about something which seems like a carb but isn't - sweet potato.

I did my last fasting diet a few weeks ago.
Cutting out carbs has never been difficult for me, it's sugar that I have a craving for at the end of a sugar free week - I now avoid all sugar Monday to Thursday.
John, instead of heavy carbs like potato, white pasta and white rice, you could try brown rice and brown pasta if you haven't already. I cut bread out of my diet completely and have found this very useful as was eating way too much for snacks etc I do miss toast and marmalade a bit though ... Lol

I'll be absolutely honest with you guys, I'm 68 years of age, 69 in January, and I'm overweight. I stopped smoking some years ago, which means I don't smoke illicit substances either now. I can count the alcoholic drinks I've partaken of this year on the fingers of one foot. Sexual liaisons are not on the menu. So b*ll*cks to dieting or I'll become a complete bloody ascetic bore to myself, and, I'm sure, to others. I'm being more careful about what I eat, but that's an end to it. If eating more healthily occasions weight loss (which it does appear to be doing to a degree) then so be it. If not? Tough. I used a belt the other day, that I hadn't worn in about a year, and ended up skewering two new holes in it, and I'm having to re-tie the drawstrings (tighter) in the jogging bottoms (there's ironic for you) I mostly slop around the house in, but I refuse to weigh myself and/or set bloody targets and such. I also refuse to punish myself by denying my body the only vice it has left to enjoy. So, once again, b*ll*cks to dieting. Over(weight) and out.

I actually feel much better keeping the weight off now Paul and hope I can maintain it. Nowadays I don't like putting on an extra one or two kg so I will get rid. I hadn't realised what a big difference it would make to my sense of well being and general fitness / mobility. Wish I had done it years earlier. Purely my personal experience - we should all do what's right and feels best for our circumstances...

For me I find it affects my quality of life. A few weeks into the diet I usually notice my mind is clearer and I have more energy levels. I agree about quality of life is important After 3 strict weeks I will allow myself weekend treats but at present i need to get away from the cravings I have had cravings from sugar in the past and about 6 years ago I was drinking 2 to 3 cans of coke. Thankfully I find I can go without cravings.

Yes I find I can normally maintain my target weight by sticking to a careful carb and sugar restricted diet during the week and then limited weekend treats ...

Just out from Tim Spector and Zoe Taken from the conversation transcript "Jonathan Wolf: Tim, are the health benefits of intermittent fasting proven? [00:04:07] Tim Spector: Yes. Although we don't know what goes on long term, so definitely short term. [00:04:14] Jonathan Wolf: Are there risks from intermittent fasting? [00:04:17] Tim Spector: There are some risks, but minimal if you are fairly healthy and it doesn't last very long. [00:04:22] Jonathan Wolf: And finally, we had a lot of questions about whether intermittent fasting affects men and women differently, particularly due to female hormones and menopause. [00:04:30] Tim Spector: We simply don't know. We don't really have enough data at the moment to answer that question. That's why we need bigger studies. [00:04:38] Jonathan Wolf: And I think that's actually a perfect way to introduce some very exciting news. Right, Tim? So, ZOE is actually about to launch the world's biggest-ever intermittent fasting study, and part of that is because we don't know most of the answers right to these scientific questions. joinzoe.com/learn/podcast-intermittent-fastingFor the full read.

Starting a new intermittent fasting diet today after some mild Xmas excess ... The goal is to lose 4kg which shouldn't take too long.
Following my previous pattern of one day fasting with coffee and water to fuel the day followed by one day careful eating - no heavy carbs / fats / sugar / alcohol.
After that I'll be back on my usual 'maintenance diet' of 5 days careful eating as above and a few treats allowed on the weekend.
This all works well for me but everyone needs to find what suits them the best of course.

Your 5:2 is what I do though with the alcohol part I allow myself a beer (sometimes 2) on 4 evenings per week. I weigh myself every day and have a good feel for what is real weight gain vs food within my system. I’ve found sharing a bottle of wine with my wife usually results in an empty bottle whereas sticking with beer I find it easy to have just 1 or 2 so I ultimately consume fewer units, depending on the beer, I tend to prefer session beers which are weaker. My wife just has a small glass (100ml) or two of wine, a wine saver stopper keeps the rest of the bottle fresh. As you say, we all need to find what works for ourselves.

I'd forgotten how much colder you can feel whilst dieting but was reminded last night - it was already cold but it seriously felt a couple of degrees cooler = really bad night.

I would say this is a "must see" if you are interested in current thinking on all aspects of diet. It's 1hr 30 so I'm watching in segments.
On the basis of info provided I'm trying various gut friendly foods and also those that can raise Serotonin levels to boost mood. I'll report more on these as I try them.
I have already tried a Kefir drink from Waitrose and rather like it, it's just like a thick yoghourt drink really. Very good for the gut, it's going to be a regular on weekly shop for me. Kimchi is next to try and some proper organic raw sauerkraut...

The biome becomes more important by the day
The more I read of that and similar the more I can see it as vital.
I've added a lot of fruit and veg since becoming biome aware. Processed sugar is right out. Very little processed food at all for me
Sauerkraut every lunchtime for me Nuts and seeds too

I maintain a hybrid intermittent fasting diet by just cutting out breakfast. Eat Dinner around 4:30-5:00 Eat Lunch around 11:00-12:00. I'm at the gym everyday from 9:30-11:30 (retired). Actually weigh less now at 67 than I did when I was 20 years old - 5'-8" 145lbs.

I've been on an intermittent way of eating for 3 months. Lunch any time between 11am and 2pm. Dinner at approx 6pm. BMI still says I'm a very unhealthy weight, even with some improvement.
One of the advantages is eliminating a meal. Sometimes get waylaid by snacks around 4pm, but overall have managed okay. No fuss if it doesn't work for parts of the day. There's always tomorrow.
I do most of the cooking, and trying to cook less for dinner. Also trying to make more tasty meals.
This coming week I'm going on a 14 day detox. See what that does to the end of the month.
