l am hoping for another TAS member to give it a try. l think of all the progress that l have made with my set up, and it's mainly been done to the reduction in noise. 100g of Rochelle salt just arrived. This was/is intended to go into the grounding boxes, but I’ll try it elsewhere after I’ve read over your testing again.

It's very effective, you don't need much at all. It's all on my blog, for myself there was no going back, using it on plug sockets and switches and consumer unit, it's also very cheap

Well l hope we all enjoying a little bit of spring today, before more Rain. O well that's the British weather, had the choice of tackling the first cut of the year vs not using the condenser and putting the washing on the line... The line won 🤣. We just need a bit more heat, but the reality is,l will have to strim the lawn, before mowing it... Bet l'm not the only TAS member in the same boat. So today...lt's also my turn to do the Sunday Roast, we take in rotation with my wife, myself and son. But l've still managed to get a bit of modding in. This mornings project... My Gigabyte Brix server storage is on a 8TB SSD, loaded into a HD caddy that's powered via a ifi power x 12volt supply. l decided to revisit this, from old experiments using my old Brix by running running it's SSD outside the Brix case, and l also did it when l ran a Windows OS setup. The upshot, this made a big difference, but it was more noticeable on the Main operating system drive, it was quite a revelation at the time, then l discovered Copper tape, and how effective it was on certain components, it certainly helps on SSD drives. On my current Gigabyte Brix N4500,thankfully now that l run a m.2 direct to the motherboard, those OS SSD issues have gone. lt's with that thought, l'd thought I would ditch the HD caddy and its it 12volt regulator and flashing LED. Don't get me wrong, it's not that it's sounds bad, but as you probably know, l like to push for an improvement, and l can always revert back anyway. Sheilded SSD Direct 5v DC by Damien Read, on Flickr Well there isn't much to report in the photo. l ordered a SATA female to male adapter, then a USB 3 to SATA adapter. For the SATA cable,l use my favourite SATA cable, a Silverstone SSR-CPO7, this is already sheilded, and was a instant upgrade just using this cable over bog standard ones,l added additional sheilding, then reworked a SATA power cable, getting ride of the all the wires except the red and black, and then powered it with my ifi Elite 5v psu. All of this had my usual copper tape sheilding, and just slipped the 8TB SSD into a jiffy bag, that was covered in ..... Copper tape of course. I can report a a slight improvement, slightly less harshness, and noticeably a better lower end, more reinforcement to lower frequencies. A more natural flow, and it reminds me of the difference when comparing Flac to WAV files, my preference being WAV. Lastly.. Those replacement caps in my FMC units have seemed to have lost the harshness, so they sound similar to the other Panasonic FC, my verdict, you would be happy with an increase in voltage or capitance on that mod, so no loosers really. Enjoy your weekend Damien

Bright but chilly here. Did the leaf blowing and tidied up, first time without needing to wear a coat. Been using the washing line whenever we can, only tumble the small stuff. Washed the car yesterday. No DIY this weekend

Perhaps l should just wrap some Crystals in copper tape and place in the oven as well... 🤣 Seems to do something in the fridge

Everything on pause then, until the LB clock get released... It's a bit like your new Regen saga 🤣 Myself..l Listen to my setup more in the spring... Still ..roll on a bit of heat!

Well l was up early today... So got finally around to a task, l should have got around to months ago. Sponsored by Guinness today.... l finally got my Blue Peter head on, and made a sheild for my Gustard R26 DACs R2R section, l have always thought,it's been a bit out in the open, that sensitive board, open the the audio noise pirates. Guinness Box Copper Sheild R26 R2R by Damien Read, on Flickr I cut up some packaging from a number of Guinnesses l consumed yesterday, and made a little hood. Covered it in Copper tape, then re covered the Copper tape, with insulation tape, it's a tight fit, so you need to insure that no Copper than touch any components. Completed Copper R26 R2R Sheild by Damien Read, on Flickr Above is the finished article. We'll what do know... l hear an instant improvement... Well.... Thats a nice surprise... l can actually hear an improvement, midrange is less smeared, and interaction between instruments and easier to follow,l can hear reverb trails definitely longer,so it's probably reduce the noise floor. I am listening to the Latest Rock Candy remaster of Dokken Under Lock & Key. I have a few different versions of this album, a favourite from my hair metal days, even though it has to much compression, l'm hearing production parts l have never heard period... The ridiculous amount of reverb used on Don Dokken's vocals, and harmonics from Mick Brown's Sabian Ride Cymbals... There's always something about holding back on mods, you complete it, then it smacks you back in the mouth, and you wished you did it months ago. So that's what a call a victory for less noise, storage on Server reduced... R26 audio output reduced. l wonder if l should Sheild another board in the R26.... Any suggestions 🤔

Any suggestions 🤔" As I have discovered with my ongoing saga "small problem cured, bigger result" Copper foil is your friend reducing unwanted EMI/RFI 50 hz noise I suggest shielding everything you sensibly can. I agree "you need to insure that no Copper than touch any components". other than that go for it. it will also avoid a slug problem.

I think you taken the R26 to heights no one could have imagined. This should work well for other DACs

I should have a look inside the Lab12 R2R DAC and see how easy it would be to add shielding it is required.

Thanks Palace.. I think moving forward, separating separate section will also pay dividends, of its a matter of debate if it will influence the sound, but being we are just sheilding and reducing noise, it won't hurt l guess. It all started when l removed the R26 transformers away and in a separate enclosure, that l realised that as good as the R26, having all those components leaking noise on to each other, that things, could be improved upon.

Certainly worth looking into, it's no surprise, that High End Components often have separate enclosures, but at a premium price. In terms carboard, something like cereal box cardboard will work. You got nothing to loose, and everything to gain

Not quite so easy to do in a non R2R DAC, although I have used bitumen damping on the inside cover of the X26 Pro and, of course, the tungsten cube mod.

Nice work Damien, I wonder how much more you can squeeze out of the R26 e we other all your mods. It must be a serious step up from the standard Dac now.

Not quite so easy to do in a non R2R DAC, although I have used bitumen damping on the inside cover of the X26 Pro and, of course, the tungsten cube mod. lt's possible, just a case of getting inventive with the cardboard cut outs. The transformers blast so much noise on both the X26 & R26,due tot he close proximity, that you may not hear any gains in sheilding the audio path, due to the transformers so much.
