Done it a few times Mike but a bit sore afterwards. Sometimes I'm a bit busy in the morning but, TBH, I really need to make these exercises my priority and it will hopefully get easier. I will continue doing them however

If you are sore then you need it Brian The main thing is in the head - do it every day Do less if necessary What I have so far is around 10-15 minutes of what seems to be an ever increasing, enjoyable routine Music on of course and the time flies As you are a hardy Scot and I am a mere soft Southerner you can probably have the doors or windows open longer than the few minutes I can manage at the start

I had a bit of a shock with my physio on Saturday. He works on pain and disfunction associated with my herniated disc.
Turns out my hamstrings were stretched like piano strings! This explains why my lower back complained when leaning forward only slightly the other week to look at computer screen whilst standing - was enough to cause a problem. Needless to say I am working on upper hamstrings every day now as part of my exercise routine. I'd like to do one for the lower hamstrings too.

Something I've wanted to do recently is to reclaim the squat as a resting position. This has been partly prompted by my 2 year old, who I noticed can maintain a deep squat for hours while playing with with his train set. I did a little googling yesterday and found this 30 day challenge: placeofpersistence.com/30-30-squat-challenge-by-ido-portal/The idea is to spend 30 minutes of the day, broken up however you like, resting in a deep squat position. I had a go yesterday and did two rounds of 15 minutes. The first few minutes of each round were the hardest, and then it got easier as I relaxed into it a little more. I think it's going to be really good for my leg mobility, particularly my ankles, which are a weak spot for me, so will stick at it.

Something I've wanted to do recently is to reclaim the squat as a resting position. Never mind 30 minutes, a couple of minutes would give me a hard time. I appreciate that it needs easing into, but I know how much my body would object at first. I'm going to try it anyway.

A coupe of minutes is a great start if your body isn't used to squatting - it'll get easier and the times will get longer if you keep it up. And the 'rules' of this challenge allow you to break up the 30 mins into as many short sessions as you like. I've always been very loose limbed, which introduces its own problems (all too easy to over extend and damage things), but I have an easier time squatting deep than most, so don't take my 15 mins as any kind of benchmark!

I have been practicing Jivamukti Yoga for many years, and here is a nice, concise class. The first 10 minutes contain the "Magic Ten" sequence which you can do on its own if you have little time:

I've been squatting while listening tonight. I must admit that more than 5 minutes at a time for me is agony. It hurts mainly in my calf muscles but also my knees after a while. I can get my feet flat after a bit. I'll keep on with it to see if it helps long term.

Don't think I have been to a Yoga or Pilates session where holding for anything longer than a minute or so was a part. I'm incredibly happy to be able to get anywhere near a squat with the state my knees were in, especially my left one

Don't think I have been to a Yoga or Pilates session where holding for anything longer than a minute or so was a part. This sounds right, but yoga and pilates positions are not typically resting positions - you're always holding a certain amount of tension. But the squat is a resting a position, it's just that - after a lifetime of sitting in chairs - most of us (in the West, at least) lack the joint mobility to be able to use it as such. But by regularly spending just a short amount of time resting in a deep squat you'll slowly regain some of that mobility. I've been squatting while listening tonight. I have been deep squatting while brushing teeth in the morning for years. Not for that long though.
I just tried a 10 min squat while watching the Aus Open tennis - no problems. Rising straight up afterwards, no hands. Will do more often..

More added to Original Post How is your morning routine going brian2957 , rfan8312 .... Thanks Mike, I left my job of 4 years (CNC machine shop) did a lightning round of calls each day for 3 days and had companies to choose from, landed in a shop near my home that has promised to teach me programming for CNC using MasterCam. I get home at 330pm now and work out. Cheatability (sp?) Sit ups - my feet tucked under the bedroom dresser. No longer counting reps just setting a timer for 3 minutes and even that is quite taxing for me. Pushups - Usually 100 over the course of the day. Which is a drop from 160. I notice if I take a week off my pushups are cut down nearly in half. Hoping to weasel my way into 200 per day somehow. Jogging - Jogs have auffered from bitter cold but thermal suit arrived last week. I've tested it out it really keeps you warm under normal layers. No matter the outside temperature. Bought thermal hat and gloves and will attempt night time runs at 7pm each night. Juicing - Have eliminated all but carrots and celery. Not exactly tasty, but not terrible. Will add chia seeds and broccoli this weekend. Juicing about 3 times per week. Drinking lemon water with cucumber 3 times per week.
