Change of plan, I went today . . . and I called that wrong, it even exceeded my expectations, what a lousy film.
Holy crap it's tedious, by the time the extremely poor depiction of Waterloo arrived I'd nearly lost the will to live. I found it a totally mindless 2 hour period costume soap opera, with an additional 20 minutes or so of very average spectacle and another 10 minutes of awkward sex scenes. I did like the scenes of Malta though, brief as they were.
To save me lots of typing this lady sums it up nicely - I really don't want to ever think about it again, it's complete nonsense . . . but, YMMV
I might go and watch The Killer again as that now seems like a pretty decent film.

Belfast.
Beautifully shot. Nice vignettes. Some good acting.
However, it has the look of trying to charm, or be memorable, and results in Belfast being almost completely devoid of charm. I started to tire way before the end as the story remains obstinately directionless. Branagh might believe he's a great director but not on the evidence of this.
The best thing about it? The Van Morrison soundtrack.

Road House (Amazon Prime)
Now I'm rather fond of the original 1989 film starring Patrick Swayze. It's very much of its time but it works for one reason only - the star quality and raw charisma of Swayze. When he stands at the bar just grinning and doing nothing it works. Sadly Jake Gyllenhaal has about as much charisma as a plastic bag and just looks like a grinning idiot. His performance is so flat overall it could send you to sleep and in fact I chose sleep in preference to watching the second half of the film.
The other *big* problem with this film is the "performance" of Conor McGregor as a crazed Irish hoodlum. It's so cartoony and OTT you'd think he was on crack or something. It's so, so bad you need to see it to believe. He makes Vinnie Jones look like John Hurt. But I guess the producers didn't care as long as he brought his fanbase with him. The rest of the mediocre talent all toil away safe in the knowledge they are getting paid for this dreck.

Why do they constantly rehash a perfectly good film that didn't need a second try?
When you say "I chose sleep" sometimes I don't even choose!

I saw a one-word review of Roadhouse this morning. All it said was "Unnecessary", along with a warning that it was probably best if you even avoid the street which is home to your local cinema when it's showing.

I can't believe that they keep ruining old classics (actually I can believe it).
Watching Jake Gyllennhaal is literally only one step removed from watching Toby Maguire which is the same as watching a being trapped inside of a human body that it is QUITE unfamiliar with the controls of.

Boy Kills World
Wow. They fucked it up. A few cool moments but I walked out. Too bad because its Bill Skarsgaard in the lead role and Sharlto Copley has a good role.

Lol yes. I thought Bill Skarsgaard can't lose. I'd read reviews that touted this film as Kill Bill meets Ninja Assassin (give or take an ass).
It sucks...but in like new and interesting ways.
On my way to see Alien. Never got to see it in a theater before.

Thanks. I wish we had a Weyland Yutani thread. There's a LOT to this world.
Also, let's not forget. In sci-films these days the camera cuts 15 times during a simple conversation (like in Event Horizon), it's not immersive. It looks/feels like flashy Hollywood stuff.
In Alien, when Dallas is explaining to the crew that they've picked up a signal...the camera barely cuts once. It's handheld but moving only very slightly. It's immersive it feels like we are sitting at the able with them.

I Saw The TV Glow
I was really hoping for something spooky on this one. It's like there's something there but the director just didn't get it quite right.
Some of the performances are staggering but with dialogue that may as well be about how paperclips are made. Tour De Force performances with tears in their eyes talking about a goofy TV show. Weird movie but I'd bet it leads to more roles at least for Brigette Lundy-Paine.

Here's a film that certainly isn't "unremarkable" but also doesn't fit in the "remarkable" category - it's certainly worth catching and not what I associate with Netflix at all in that it's an intelligent and adult film.
"Fair Play" is set against the backdrop of Wall St and the intense pressures that brings to a romantic relationship. Excellent lead performance from British actress Phoebe Dynevor as a high flyer trying to adapt to a highly misogynistic world.
The film veers slightly off-kilter towards the end but the female perspective is for the most part very well handled by director Chloe Domont. I was staggered to see the film reduced to the status of "erotic thriller" by Wiki, that's quite shameful. Anyone who expects another Basic Instinct will be muchly disappointed - this shows the grinding breakdown of relationships both personal and professional with very little in the way of gloss and veneer.
