Spotify started with a massive head start but seem to have squandered every chance to get standard-res and hi-res off the ground, now being behind almost all the others. I know they should understand their target market best, but they've already misjudged podcasts.

They seem to be getting most things right ...

I was talking about quality standards, not subscribers.
We'll have to see how it works for them long term. Sadly, we do live in a world where quality is not always in demand.

Yes but your and my idea of quality won't be the same as what signifies quality for the mass market.

Agree about quality standards. Reminds me when you ask people how is the food in a new restaurant and they reply, great the portions are big!!

I know dozens of people who love it, hell pretty much everyone I know uses it and not one sees it from your perspective Martin

You're still looking at it from the viewpoint of an audiophile, but Spotify isn't for them! Of course I am! But we are a community of people who appreciate high quality reproduction of the music we love. My message is: Spotify could do better. So why haven't they, when they so easily could as they have the digital masters in order to do so? Or do they?

I think the year on year subscriber growth has meant that Spotify have put "Hifi" on the back burner and concentrated on developing what they see as more profitable assets.
When / if it comes I will have to see if it's worth a extra fiver a month. If it is, there shouldn't need to be any extended listening sessions involved, with hours of A>B comparisons, I will need to be quickly won over.

Old blokes who demand sonic perfection is not such a big market in the scheme of things, and so are not Spotify's target demographic. They have pretty much cornered the " yoof" market and, basically, don't care about audiophiles because they've no doubt done their sums and decided for the number of people who actually want a high-end solution it's just not financially viable. If they were a new kid on the block they might run it as a loss leader, but they're well enough established now not to need to.

I have had a free Spotify account since virtually day one. Most tracks sound acceptable, some sound really good and some sound stunning....to my buggered lugs anyway. Something that I have noticed recently is that the sounstage can vary from track to track with the singer or main instrument skewed to the L or R and some are spot on. Anyone else noticed this?

I'm starting to get the impression you're not a fan of Spotify Martin

I used to be a big fan of Spotify, Tim. You only need to read back a few years to see that.
My problem is that they have barely invested in real improvements except for non-music stuff like podcasts.

Catalogue, lyrics, artist info presentation, best suggestions (if selected) once playlist stops, best UI to get at the music, Connect (or should that be CONNECT) - shout that at the others🙂 These are all music things..

Spotify is also the only service which has a dedicated Linux app Qobuz have promised Qobuz Connect for over a year now and there's still no sign of it appearing.

They did say they hadn't expected there to be so much work involved in making Connect

Agreed, and I do agree that Qobuz should have worked harder on it. However, Bubble / DLNA suit my needs perfectly so I personally haven't been at Qobuz as much over this issue (although I have raised it in Qobuz Club).

Would really make a difference to Qobuz from what I have seen around about the lack of Connect Could give Q a good extra load of users whereas Spotty losing SQ seekers is negligible to their turnover

Well there is no phool like and old Audiophool! Got more and more frustrated with the wandering soundstage. Much time spent swapping pre-amps, moving speakers in, out, back, forwards, toe-in, toe-out, sweating, grunting and swearing. When I re-homed the Lampz I added an L-pad to attenuate the Mids and HF. Hmmm there was no way I could have got it wrong?.....WRONG! In my defence the wiring is not as one would expect for a simple In-Out affair. Anyhoo reversed 2 connections on each pad et Voila! The advice as always is Don't Get Old!
