If you do get the NAD make sure you get it on sale or return. It should work well with the Frugels but always best to be safe

John, What speaker cable are you running with the NAD. I would have to get 6m/2m runs...

I just use the Belkin Pro that went so cheap a few years back. Never felt the need to upgrade with it

When Steve brought the frugal over his own cable sounded better with his speakers, with my speakers the Belkins were better

Apologies guys, my computer had to visit the hospital, but I have been in contact with Kevin privately. Well, an additional, optional piece is part of the full specification Frugelhorn Mk3 plan set. It is a prism that sits directly at the rear of the speaker with dual function; to increase the effective horn mouth area, improving the rear wave shape and deflecting it to either side rather than bouncing back into the mouth. This is particularly useful to eliminate any tendency towards bass bloom when the cabinet is sited in a corner. I wanted to model a version that contributes a little more to the speaker's appearance, but most importantly could be adjusted. The additional panels form legs which can be folded back to form the prism, angled back to form a larger deflector, positioned to the side to simulate a flat wall or scooped forward like a corner. This allows the cabinet to be positioned in more free space yet retain and tune the bass enhancement. The obvious change is a more open acoustic with a boost to the projection and presence. James - the front flares that you have seen are my driver covers. Primarily cosmetic and functioning as driver protection from rug rats, they are fine for less critical listening as the shape compensates for the fabric a little, yet obviously more focused than the wide dispersion of a naked Mark Audio design. For speaker cables, the Frugels do like a bit of resistance and solid core copper; a configuration of Cat cable works a charm.

I can confirm Steves findings on this addition to the frugal.Bass is indeed much cleaner and the bloom in my room went competely. This makes the speakers far more tuneable to the room and also increases the size of the soundstage in wxhxd. This to my ears is a must have for any frugal horn owner. This has had an excellent effect to the sound of my speakers.I have also added some reference fidelity mercury interconnects replacing cardas golden cross, besting it by some margin.I am replacing my audio note m3 with a pure sound l300 and cannot wait to see what Steves speakers reveal.I have now been living with the frugals for a few months and am more than happy.I prefer these to my AN/e and LV IBXR2 and have been swapping them in and out of system with some tonian labs td-l1s,a superb speaker with a fostex 8 inch driver and highly modified ribbon. The cabinets are tuned like a musical instrument and are described as a semi open baffle. If you read the reviews of the tonian labs you will see in the reviews that every reviewer was blown away by these and one of them sold his nine thousand pound reference speakers to buy a pair.During my listening to both sets of speakers I have found the tonians to be superb but the frugals still amaze with the bass and top end.The frugals still do things that best the tonians, and anybody that has heard the tonians will know that is high praise indeed.During my time with the frugals they still surprise me with their overall balance and superb top end.anybody who has the frugals try and get to hear what these sound like with the wings.Another superb upgrade from Steve.

Nice, Steve. The cone flares may well suit people like me who prefer a highly focussed performance rather than wide-and-ambient presentation.

The fabric can be removed (once) to use only the flares and they could be considered a tuning aid, but I do regard driver covers as a necessary evil. It seems that children find the centre of an MA driver to be an irresistible button. It certainly pushes all mine when they try! These speakers with their rear output, like OB's, have a very live and open presentation, yet they should also have within this scale quite etched image definition. The Alpair 7 driver gives fascinating note decay. I've been with Norton a couple of times when we've added the deflectors and they seemed to take away any reference to the room boundary.

Thoughts on Electric Beach Frugel 3's (OP)

Interesting....did it work well sonically? Is the second speaker totally separate of does it port into the frugel cabinet?
Go on Steve...spill the beans!!!!

Thoughts on Electric Beach Frugel 3's (OP) They look nice & seem like great value. Well, thank you sir I have a construction and finishing skeleton that I can hang different suits on according to taste, from earthy hand finished wood to classy piano black, yet retain a common style. Each pair are made as if they were for myself. I try to stay true to the ethos of the original design, simple fundamentals well executed that bring their own sonic reward. I don't add anything that isn't there to benefit the sound and selling direct keeps the price as attractive as the result.

Simply run as a totally separate cabinet with the vent firing down the back of the Frugel Tony. Could be interesting with Alpair 7 in the M1NX, I was using CHR70. Although the output is greater from the two drivers, crossing the lowest frequencies to a sub has more benefit to the high frequencies of a single driver than putting another in a separate smaller box.

I hadn't tried the driver covers as Im wee one free most of the time. Pleasantly surprised sonically...seems to reinforce the bass without softening the treble with a slight focussing of the sound. Another tuning option I had not really considered.
Steve PM sent regards the minx....

As long as the output port is suitably tuned....
