Well...this is awkward.
Instead of artsy fartsy crowd coming to our side I may actually begin dabbling in black and white films with subtitles while looking for any excuse to casually mention said films in order to remind people that I'm the kind of person who watches those kinds of films.
I...I walked out of Deadpool vs Wolverine. There're something like 50 jokes in the first 10 minutes. Every scene is just an excuse to break the 4th wall. The intense violence scenes are ultra cute with funny banjo music. The full-on dance scenes to Backstreet Boys songs are a bit much.
I've had to do some soul searching to try to describe this film and I keep coming back to this:
Back in the 90's during the Seinfeld + Friends days of NBC's Must-See-Tv line-up was a very popular show called Will & Grace. A flamboyantly over the top cartoon like cast playing as a group of selfish friends on the hunt for any excuse to use jazz hands.
Well, even those people would blush watching Deadpool vs Wolverine.
For all I know there could have been some good action towards the end of the film but I was exhausted by it all at the halfway mark and left.

I like a bit of Backstreet Boys but don't think I could make it through that!

Hah! Not at all surprised to read this review.
Colleagues at work were suggesting I should see it. I tried to explain that I would rather stand in a wardrobe, but they didn't get the full power of my dismissal of all things Marvel.

Sorry to hear that Robert, always disappointing to have to walk out of a film, which is never an easy decision to make especially if you've paid for it! I'll give it a miss then

Deadpool Vs Wolverine was excellent, exactly as we hoped, my teenage (she's 19) granddaughter is a major Marvel/Anime fan so she's my cinema buddy. We both thoroughly enjoyed it, it's a comic, what did we expect, something deep and meaningful, no of course not, it's a blast and the iMax image was excellent and the audio was superb. The opening credit scene was really well done and was obviously 3D inspired. We also thought that the music during the fight scenes was well chosen. Have I seen better? Definitely Were we entertained? Definitely Cinema was packed as it had been for the 10 days previous. If you're a fan of violent comic books, then it's well worth a watch. If you're a fan of artsy fartsy B&W subtitled movies I'd avoid it, you know the type, the ones that liked Poor Things and similar which just made me cringe with embarrassment for the lead actors every time I saw the trailer. I like B&W subtitled movies but Man Bites Dog is more my scene. Each to their own

. . . you know the type, the ones that liked Poor Things and similar which just made me cringe with embarrassment for the lead actors every time I saw the trailer. That'll be me then
But I think you'll find the lead actors really enjoy working with Yorgos Lanthimos, visionary directors are rare but he is marmite

Have you seen the latest Lanthimos yet Tim?
My mother was telling me yesterday how disturbing it was and she found it a real struggle.

I have Jules, a couple of times, I actually saw it on release day. It's on my list of films of the year and as a Lanthimos film it's more akin to The Lobster, Dogtooth and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, as in full on Lanthimos bonkers.
Unlike The Favourite and Poor Things, which for my tastes were much tamer and more accessible Lanthimos films (but you can't really claim anything he's produced to be tame by mainstream standards), it's a return to his very distinctive style of storytelling and what makes him such a unique film-maker.
I thought it was outstanding, but some could find it disturbing . . . I'd wager the bits your Mum found disturbing, were the scenes I probably laughed out loud to. It's pure Yorgos, quite confusing at times, definitely perplexing and might for some have no clear reason to exist or any real explanation of what it actually means. So if you like his earlier films (like the three mentioned above) you'll likely love it, if you don't, you'll probably want to stand in the middle of the road and hope the next juggernaut puts you out of your misery! It certainly won't convert any non Lanthimos fan's and for those that don't like him, confirm he makes really shite films.
Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are superb in it, especially Plemons and the music is spot on.
I've seen everything he's directed multiple times, a must see Director for me. He makes the types of films that have me squirming in my seat with absolute glee and for me, he's yet to make a bad one.

I watched the trailer of Poor Things. It looks like it could be bizarre in a good way. I'll try and catch it if I can.

I'll try and catch it if I can. It's on Prime but not really as you have to pay extra for it. Amazon's pay and pay again setup is the worst of all the streaming services.

What about older ones like Dogtooth or Alps? They might be more easily available (I can't check from work)?

What about older ones like Dogtooth or Alps? They might be more easily available (I can't check from work)? To be honest Martin, trying to recommend a starting point for Yorgos is I think really hard. I have a lot of friends who enjoy cinema, but not many of them like his films, he's incredibly divisive and there doesn't seem to be much middle ground, you either get him and love his work, or think it's absolute nonsense. I'd say The Favourite is probably the most accessible, which he didn't write, so it's a bit easier for a mainstream viewer. It's also very funny with two outstanding performances from Emma Stone and Olivia Coleman - it deserved its many awards and opened the door for a much wider audience. Regarding his style, one thing most people seem to struggle with is his very dark humour and if you can't see the humour, it can be tough going as he doesn't follow any kind of normal convention. Dogtooth was the first film of his I saw and I was instantly hooked, didn't have a clue what was going on but was transfixed and have been ever since. He's in my top ten of favourite directors.

Alien: Romulus is getting all kinds of mixed reviews . . . They are mixed aren't they. I've seen quite a few but haven't changed my mind about going yet. I doubt it'll be screened at my local arthouse, but who knows . . . I might possibly be tempted then as I could see it on one of my comp tickets?
However, of all the reviews I've seen they all agree on one thing, it's the best Alien film since the original two, so that's a real positive. I thought everything after Alien/Aliens were differing levels of garbage, from absolute unbelievable garbage, to just garbage.
