I had a spell with one of the original Rollei 35 cameras last summer, on loan from a friend of mine. It was too small for me to get on with very well. It did take a great photo though. Pentax have been working on a range of four film cameras for a while now. The first will apparently be released fairly soon and all of them this year.

Does anyone here use a compact 35mm camera?

I have a Konica C35 EF, which I love to use every now and then.

Nice - I guess it works like an Olympus Trip?

Nice - I guess it works like an Olympus Trip? I've never used a Trip, to be honest, so I don't really know. Three shutter speeds, over which you have no control. Set the ISO, select the focussing zone and hit the button - that's it. The one concession to user control is an exposure lock function. The lens is super sharp though.

Yes that's very similar operation to the Trip.
I bought a Trip a couple of years back and was really looking forward to using it but metering wasn't working properly - one of the reasons I have decided to resurrect my Nikon F-601. The other reason I ditched the Trip is I hated the flimsy operation and feel of the camera. It looks the part from a distance but when you handle it, that's another matter.

I still have a couple of Ricoh GR cameras around, but I suspect it has been at least 3 years since I ran a film through one. Great lens on them.

The GR lens is renowned I believe.

It is, but if the electronics start to misbehave you're buggered. I'll have to check whether the one I have here is an s or a v.
I remember reading an article by an antarctic 'explorer' who had taken all of the photographs during his trip with a GR and being impressed by their quality. I cannot remember what was now though.

Sounds intriguing - at least the electronics survived the cold!

So, are you in the market for another compact film camera, then Jules?

Probably not Chris, the only ones I like the look of have gotten very expensive.

Is 'compact' an absolute requirement?

I'm attracted to the idea of a 'luxury' compact but not the luxury prices - would love something like a Nikon 35 Ti. Would be a more travel suited alternativ my F-601. I'm not really looking for another SLR.

That would be a nice choice.

I would be more likely to buy a Contax TVS II at half the price though - I like the zoom lens but not so keen on most likely having to buy from Japan.

I've been reading up on the GR1v - looks like a fabulous camera for landscapes (and more) - some of the results I've seen are just fantastic. Would be great for holidays I think.
