I'm sorry to hear this Paul - sounds tough. From your description it certainly seems like your medication is messing with your metabolism (metabolic differences would also explain the difference in outcomes between you and your wife, even though you're eating all the same stuff). If water retention is an issue, you could have a go at a ketogenic diet - the first thing you do on shifting into ketosis is shedding all your water weight as your glycogen levels drop. It's certainly not for everyone, and should not be undertaken without a little research and planning, but for weight loss it can be highly effective. Here's a primer: www.healthline.com/nutrition/ketogenic-diet-101

I had thought about the ketogenic diet and also have been thinking about trying a plant based diet, but know a number of my friends through the heart failure communities that have tried these things and they have caused worsening of heart symptoms, so I am a little nervous.

Yes, definitely proceed with caution! I'm not at all qualified to advise, but there's lots online on the health conditions that are incompatible with these funky diets, and the risks associated with them. The ketogenic diet is used by the NHS to treat epilepsy in children, and so they have some good info on the various contraindications. One thing I would recommend though is speaking to a good nutritionist - my partner has done this recently and has found it really helpful.

I've been on an 'alternate fasting day' diet for about 10 weeks - I've lost about 8kg so far.[br I need to lose around 10kg for sure so will give this a go, thanks Jerry.

Paul, I know all about putting weight on with meds. However with me it was all about increased appetite and eating big portions. Took me some time to work this out strangely enough! I eat much more sensibly now but still have some 'weaknesses' ...

Yep, it works well for me, I rapidly got into the rhythm! Evenings provide sharpish hunger pangs, but come the morning the appetite for breakfast is gone, I have to pretty much force myself to eat. The wife was on the diet, too, and she found the same. I thought that on fast days I would feel 'weak & wobbly', but the opposite turns out to be the case! When I first came across it I thought it was just another "dodgy diet", but that recent NHS report I linked to confirms that it works and that it is safe.

So I started today Jerry. Not looking forward to those hunger pangs this evening but hoping coffee and water will get me through the day. If I can manage it and achieve anything like your weight loss I will be delighted!

Confession time ... after a couple of weeks I started to cheat a little. Just a very light snack late evening before going to bed, or I found getting to sleep a bit difficult.

Half a dozen almonds helped when I crashed. It was just enough to get me to the next meal when I needed some help - which was not that often once I got into the swing of things.

Toying with the idea of fasting after last week when I was sick and went 24 hours without eating
I cut down the amount I eat over about 30 years. The stomach gets used to smaller portions. Must eat less than half I used to and no crap now. No sweets, biscuits, cake, ice cream or any other poison except on very rare occasions

Every now and again I eat something sweet, rarely even. Usually feel a little odd afterwards. Yes more odd than usual My body may have adjusted to not having sweet items and sees them for what they are Or your a diabetic

I've managed to get by on just coffee so far today. Am expecting it to be more difficult when family are eating this evening - I may have to hide in the bedroom!

Some time ago my doctor, after I'd been for some blood tests, told me that although I was not diabetic I stood a good chance of getting there unless I mended my wicked ways. I cut out sugar in my coffee and switched to sweeteners, I stopped eating the boiled sweets I'd become addicted to, and I have become a lot more selective about what I eat and drink now. This stuff is zero-sugar, and delicious and there's always a bottle in the fridge now. It looks expensive, but you don't need to use very much at all to make up a 2L bottle. Deserts are now a no-added-sugar yogurt, or some fruit. My "treat" is a Sainsbury's Simply Organic Partially Rehydrated Dried Fig. They are absolutely gorgeous. I also bought myself a Codefree Blood Glucose Monitor, and my blood sugar level is looking a lot better now. I find that tracking it at home helps keep me on the " straight and narrow," as it were. It's one less thing to stress about, although I'm still overweight.

Hmm - I found my first ever day of fasting much easier than I thought. It wasn't even difficult in the evening whilst others were eating. Didn't go crazy over breakfast this morning either. I'm sure it was coffee that managed to get me through the day though ... I will be interested to see how long I can stick to the plan.

Weigh yourself at the end of the first week - I bet that will provide you with all the encouragement you need to continue!
.. I assume you weighed yourself before starting the diet?

The coffee needs thought. That may not be good. Water all fine of course

My focus is to just lose some weight in what I hope is a safe way. I'm much more interested in a balanced / healthy diet rather than cutting out everything I like completely. There still needs to be some enjoyment left in what I eat, especially if I'm going to keep up this diet for any length of time.
Forgot to weigh myself yesterday so got on the scales early morning.

There still needs to be some enjoyment left in what I eat, especially if I'm going to keep up this diet for any length of time. Exactly. That's why most diets just don't work for me. I soon lose interest in it if I have to miss out on the things I like. The joy of the 'alternate day fasting' diet is that I can eat as normal on the eating days, even let myself go a bit, and still lose a decent amount of weight. In practise, I find that as I want to keep dieting for several months, I do choose 'sensible' things to eat and I keep in mind that I want to eat a balanced diet. Today is a fast day for me, so I find myself planning what I will have tomorrow!
