FINALLY some people are starting to listen to "bits are not just bits" in digital audio.

Not running music out of a high-powered gaming PC ✓ Not running stereo system off of same circuit as microwave or fridge ✓ Using a galvanic isolated USB connection from Pi into DAC ✓ In using USB connection to DAC, jitter is addressed at DAC level ✓ My 2022 music system check-up is now complete Ps. - I²S would appear to be the future audio DAC connection

NAS > Gustard x26p DAC > Benchmark LA4 Pre-Amp > NAD M22-V2 Amplifier > Revel F228Be Speakers Have you tried running the Gustard straight into the NAD, using its digital volume control?

No Martin I have not. My system is in cabinet which is difficult in getting around to the back of and as much as I would like to do that ‘just to see/hear’ the difference I have gotten lazy and have not followed through. Hopefully maybe in the next upgrade (amps ?) I will. For now, I have a 7dB boost out of the Benchmark pre which gets me to my volume sweet-spot quicker.

I have been using a PI2AES for about a year now with the 5V power supply mod. Audibly, together with my Gustard it is very good. Although I use the I2S output, I think comment about it being the only DDC not involving USB is correct. The AES & SPDIF are almost indistinguishable from the I2S. I have also completely shutdown the USB system via PiCorePlayer as its not needed.

The AES & SPDIF are almost indistinguishable from the I2S. That's very useful to know. I find AES from Mutec to DAC is superb.

He successfully skipped over all of the interesting bits! I really hoped I'd lean something, but didn't. Thanks for posting it though.

At least his explanation of R2R DACs confirms why they're not for me.

Nice if you have the money I'm still getting over the fact that Chord has named a DAC "Rodney".

I have slowly exchanged all of the components in my DAC to subtly improve it: I'm thinking of calling it Trigger! Why does Martin spring immediately to mind!

I'll have you know the only component I've changed in my current DAC is the fuse!
