I think this is a good time to give a shout out to all the people on this board who have given me their input and helped put this new system together - it's really giving me a great deal of pleasure, not just from the sound quality point of view, but a feeling of almost liberation using it. It sounds highly musical as John says right now but am sure there will be more improvements to come!

Ethernet vs wifi - is there much in it in terms of pure sound quality when streaming?

This purely depends on the your brand band connection, how much traffic you have inside your house, other forums of interference etc.
At home we have 300 meg (alleged)it sounds pretty decent, but we only have a few devices maybe 5 tops, however I use a 4G router for listening to spotify as it does improve things by a respectable margin, however it has a decent psu attached to it, plus a trick RJ45 cable and other crap removing devices.
Is it worth the hassle, for vast majority NO for some yes, however we have one 'passionate' customer how has spent around 6000 making sure he has the best possible streaming 'pipe' to his system.
if you can exploit the it, then it could be worth the outlay.
Martin maybe good enough to bring his router with him when he visits Jules.
So how is this stacking up against the vinyl then?

I recall reading on the Volumio forum something to the effect that ethernet introduced a small but measurable amount of noise, that's avoided by using wifi. I've tended to use wifi with my RPis without any problems, more out of convenience than anything else. It might be worth setting up a subnet between the router and any WiPi, but I've not tried this out. edit Here's that thread: volumio.org/forum/talking-about-quality-ethernet-wifi-t132.html

Interesting I had the opposite result where I found Ethernet cables added less noise than Wi-Fi I also found getting rid the SMPS to the router and modem a nice improvement with regards to decreasing noise

I've tried both and ethernet just sounds better than wi-fi, which hits sound quality limitations pretty quickly.
Disabling the entire wi-fi module in the Pi (by turning it off in Volumio) has benefits.

I used to have a bog standard Ethernet cable which was a pretty good starter-for-ten, but then my parents bought me Chord one and it was a noticeable uplift in performance. I'd like to try the of the MeiCord at some point, like the one that John and Martin use.

Postie arrived bearing a gift from China this morning. Here's the new linear psu destined for DAC use. Not exciting to look at of course but the finish is absolutely fine and the unit is reassuringly weighty. The poor thing is rather chilly at the moment so will give plenty of time to acclimatise ...

Mine has been running 24/7 for months without any issue. Great component for the cost.

So how is this stacking up against the vinyl then? Early days Tony but here are some brief thoughts so far. One thing I can safely say is that I'm enjoying it much more than I thought I would. Advantages of digital - Choice: only a few of the classical new releases are released on vinyl and are expensive with variable pressing quality, so having access to these on spotify is really wonderful - Certain sonic benefits - low noise floor, superior resolution & detail. Combine these with good dynamics and you have some very exciting recordings indeed - Most of the new classical releases are very well recorded nowadays - Less stress. This is a big one for me and I don't mean it flippantly at all: I'm not anxious listening to the music thinking about any surface noise that may or may not be about to spoil my analogue experience - Less faff. I must admit I'm so enjoying the simplicity of it all right now with spotify. No disappointments and hassle from buying badly graded vinyl and no long cleaning sessions on the RCM Advantages of vinyl - Feels closer to the ‘live experience’ and less like a recording - Most natural reproduction of timbre - Impression of more depth to the sound - For old recordings so far I have found that analogue is significantly better than the digital equivalents on spotify, this applies to both rock and classical

I wanted something to put my new psu on as it has to go on a sideboard. I found a plinth that is advertised for model makers and taxidermists! It is handmade in solid oak, and the seller offered to make it to my custom size. And the price for this? £5.70 delivered.
