Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me, but I think this cable is digging out a little extra detail - listening to Telemann the music feels slightly more full bodied than earlier today.
Anyway, it has the advantage of being just 50cm so tidying up the jungle. It's staying.

No, I think your hearing is not deceiving you, Jules. That's a very nice digital cable!

Jerry - I'm hearing exceptionally good sounds today. I can quite happily listen to the system as is, so any incremental upgrades I can make will be a bonus.

Just focusing on software for a minute.
Got to be honest, using Qobuz in my system at present is a right PITA.
There is some kind of bug with the desktop app which means although it will find Volumio, it won't stream successfully. This forces me to go online and use the Volumio interface which is frankly horrible; I don't like the look, feel or navigation of it. It claims to work with Qobuz via their plug-in. Yes, you can search and play tracks, and access playlists but you can't view any saved albums or add to your albums which is hopeless. I wonder when they are going to fix all this stuff ...
Big advantage of Spoti is that the app works perfectly with Volumio and I don't need to go on-line. Everything works with the app as it should.

Have you looked at the Volumio forum, Jules? You might get some answers there, or at least a platform to ask your questions with the hope of getting a knowledgeable answer.

It's that that seems to be the problem, I think. My Qobuz works great without it. All the streaming services I have used are just plug and play and work fine. Buy yourself a long USB cable.

Yes thanks Paul I did have a quick scan but couldn't find any answers, just some people with the same questions! If I can be bothered I will join and ask my questions before the month free trial is over.

I found Qobuz Connect to be broken, too. The interface is not as good as Spotify, either.
In the weekend I'm going to sign up for the high res stream and see if it's got any better. I'll also check the forum for some answers, too.

I suppose we need to take into account that Volumio's inventor/developer probably has a full-time job, and gives Volumio what time he can, That was why I dumped Rune. I preferred the interface but the development cycle was slower than a stunned sloth, wearing snow-shoes, trekking through treacle.

At least there are quite a few collaborators working on Volumio together with Michelangelo, like Balbuze who wrote the Spotify Connect plug-in. Their development pace has been pretty good considering.
On the Spotify front I have no issues whatsoever. It works faultlessly. Qobuz appears to be a bit broken. Not sure about Tidal as I've never tried it.

Couple more toys on the way - the Chinese RVC passive and a 'used' Audioquest Jitterbug ...

I've got a couple of Jitterbugs too, Jules. I'm still not sure how much good they're doing in my systems, but they're certainly not doing any harm. I'll be interested to hear your verdict.

I had an AQ Jitterbug. Used inbetween my PC and DAC it caused loss of signal lock. Used in a separate USB outlet in made f-all difference.
Sold the damn thing on!

I don't have any great expectations of the AQ - not a big investment and easy to sell on if need be!

I've now added a 5V 'powerbank' bought from Amazon to feed the pi ...
Well it works! Wish it had an on/off button instead of having to insert the usb cable each time. Bit early to say if it's any worse or better than the battery that John kindly lent me but definitely better than the pi supplied psu.

Good. The Pi power supply is awful - anyone saying it doesn't matter what you power the Pi with must be cloth-eared!

When John and I powered the pi with a battery the difference was one of those night and day moments ... There were no veils being lifted, more like the Berlin Wall! Or something like that ...

Dammit! I’m fighting my better judgement here but I think the system sounds distinctly better with the new Jitterbug plugged into one of the spare USB ports on the pi. Using two test tracks - Saint Saens Organ Symphony with Guillou and the superb live recording by Andris Nelsons of Shosta 10, I am immediately experiencing much more depth to the sound and significantly higher dynamics. It’s an absolute riot! The system had about 45-50 mins to warm up, so that shouldn’t be an issue here ... This is also a big thumbs up for the powerbank that is powering the pi - first time I have really played it in anger and it’s doing a very good job indeed - very clean background and no squashed dynamics here!
