Jules, you might try investigating routers that support "USB tethering," which might enable you to connect your phone to the router via a USB lead, thereby avoiding either removing the sim or paying for a second one. Interesting idea Paul! Will look into that, thanks..

Just get a cheap ethernet switch box and plug the long cable into it on your living room and from there two cables into your mac and your tinker board. Nah guv, don't want a cable trailing across living room to hifi rack ... Can you go around the skirting boards or even better under the flooring? For my top floor, where I have not run ethernet cable, I just use a HomePlug. Works a treat, even with HD videos. Did a load of testing if any HF noise being thrown into the network - zilch so far as I could hear.

HomePlugs are the spawn of Beelzebub. You do all you can to clean and filter your mains for best sound quality, then you deliberately inject noise and garbage into it!

I played with some but gave up on it - was getting audible noise when I used my phono stage. However, they did enable me to perform an interesting test on a seemingly ineffectual plug in mains filter - it turned out that data transfer rates between machines were a few megabytes per second faster when the filter was connected by the homeplug, so I guess it was doing something.

I kinda knew I was stepping into dangerous territory mentioning homeplugs. Forgive me.

Was hoping to avoid long runs and use a better quality router. I may just have to keep plugging in my long network cable when streaming (not the biggest hassle) or just cough up for a 4g router and data SIM card.

I can't really explain it but there's something about having a dedicated connection for music streaming. Why 4G works so well is another mystery, but it really does.

Of course it wins for sheer convenience but do you think there is a sonic benefit from using a 4G SIM over a router with phone line connection?

In my case, it's likely to be because BT 4G wins over our landline Plusnet, by 60M versus 20M speed with less lag.

I have succumbed to the Dark Side - Lord Jerry Vader telepathically coerced me into buying a pair of Philips Fidelio X2HR. Resistance was futile.

LOL.
I caved in at 135. It's a good price and since 'nearly new' was only 15 quid cheaper on Amazon I thought I would buy new. They sell for up to 90-ish second hand.

I was using my Soundmagic E10 in ear phones into my LG phone yesterday while jet washing. Was reminded yet again how good they sound and how much external sound they block.

I've got the E10 - I agree they are good. So impressed with them I then bought E50S - even better! Although they make the E10 sound bass heavy. Or the E50S are bass light.

There is NO comparison.
I will write up my initial thoughts in the morning ...
