My X2HR are here. Great sound but I have the dreaded channel imbalance. 2nd set arriving tomorrow.
SQ is good in system 1 with the Lindemann Source and system 3 with a certain Black Tulip preamp.

Right, it seems I have done a small injustice to the Superlux!
Let me explain. To use with streaming Spotify premium on my phone I bought a tiny £30 Chinese DAC / headamp dongle and used this with the Philips straightaway. I was blown away - it is absolutely different class to the Superlux plugged straight into the phone. The dongle does a quite superb job of boosting output, clarity, bass and dynamics - I can recommend it unreservedly. But last night I plugged it into the Superlux and the results were most surprising and confirms that the Superlux are actually amazing value for money at £40. They are very dynamic with pop and dance etc but a little more 'aggressive' than the Philips which make instruments slightly more realistic, especially on classical music; they also have the edge on vocals, just that bit more natural and easier on the ear. Certainly for a longer session you would want to be listening to the Philips.
Where the Philips win out conclusively is on build quality and comfort. I find them very pleasing aesthetically - love the microphone style mesh on the drivers. Yes there is plastic on the surrounds but not a problem at all for me at this price point. Someone has really thought about the design and they feel wonderful when you put them on - the combination of thick velour memory foam earpads and snug headband is just right. So comfortable in fact, they feel almost luxurious and opulent in a way I haven't come across before with headphones. Will have to see how they fare with use.
For a fun headphone work-out I love this Lady Gaga track and also the recent Haim EP sounds wonderful throughout.
Happy Daze.

Gissa link for the amazing Chinese dongle, then! I do a fair bit of direct mobile phone headphone listening in the garden.

With "600Ω high impedance thrust" I'll bet they're good!

Aloha amigos. I have now acquired a saucy little Topping NX4 to run with my Philips cans. First thing to say is that it comes in a very comprehensive package with all manner of cables and rubbery stuff to lash it to your mobile phone. It is very nicely finished in typical Topping style with a smooth and solid aluminium shell. You can also run it as a standalone DAC or amp should you choose. Two nice features are selectable gain level and bass boost; my Philips was set to low gain. Sound wise it gives just a modest increase in rez and clarity compared to my Meizu dongle. If I had bought new and paid full whack for this (c £120-160) I would be disappointed, but seeing as I got mine for a lot less in very nice condition, I'm not complaining. Just goes to show what excellent value the Meizu is ... I did another Spoti Premium test, playing the same song back to back on the Qoboz website as a 'sample' since I'm not a subscriber. I have no idea what kind of rez the samples are, but they are clearly superior. The Spoti stream sounds a tiny bit congested in comparison.

I would have been interested in the Meizu with my previous LG phone, the Q6, but now that I have a G7 the sound quality with the Soundmagics is pretty damned good. I use the Qobuz app on the phone, too.

I am well pleased with my new case for the Philips. Really nicely made - contains a moulded insert which you tailor by removing parts to suit your specific cans and then you get a nice snug fit. Excellent!

I've been having a frustrating time with my TV picking up Freeview channels. Last week I worked out roughly 25 were missing from the available lineup. I wondered about what could be causing this and maybe the aerial being out of position, but eventually started reading about HDMI cables causing interference to the signal. I also noticed that the £2.99 aerial cable was crossing any number of different cables from which it could pick up interference but there was really no way round this.
So instead of getting an aerial dude out I thought I would invest in a good quality aerial cable to check if that could be an issue. Looked at lots on Amazon but none of them were showing exactly what coax cable they were using. Doing some googling I found a quad shielded IXOS cable with 18awg RG6 cable, custom made to length and choice of gold plugs. So I thought this would be worth a punt to ensure the TV gets the best possible signal.
On retuning I now have my channels back including BBC Four HD and BBC News that had annoyingly been absent for some time. Not bad for a 20 quid investment! So the moral of this story is cables really do make a difference LOL.

Hah! I did have a problem with my 27" monitor juddering the picture and then dropping it after a while, entailing switching it off and back on again. I really thought I had a faulty monitor. After a lot of messing about, I tried a different HDMI cable without a ferrite choke around it. Turns out that HDMI at high resolutions (around 4K) doesn't want a choke around it as it filters the high frequency picture signal as well as the noise!

All of my HDMI cables are... well... I don't need to mention the brand, do I? I may, at some stage, be tempted to buy a brace of Blue Jeans coax cables to feed my FreeSat box though.

Anachronistic ? Back here in the 80s I have a Russ Andrews coax supplying from the wall socket to Freeview box and SCART to TV. You just can't beat ancient French tech that was always faulty Might give the HDMI Freeview to TV another go. Vaguely remember the TV insisted on switching to that for any excuse, or summat The present beckons...

There is no chance of differentiating modern DACs by spec I'm afraid, Jules. You need to listen or buy on a return basis if you can.

It's a preamp, not a DAC - does the same premise apply?
