Originally written for the lyra organizzatta, two of them, a bulky violin-like instrument, played by turning a crank, it was none other than a hurdy-hurdy with added features. the one Haydn wrote for in addition to its strings had a small set of minuture organ pipes/whistles blown by bellow actuated by the crank. Flute and Oboe replace the hardy-gurdys here. It seems the only reason Haydn wrote for this instrument was his patron Ferdinand IV os Naples played one and it was for him. The write up on the record sleeve about the instrument is quite interesting. It rather good music whatever it was originally written for. Joseph Haydn, Collegium Musicum of Paris* – Two Concerti For Flute, Oboe And Orchestra Label: Nonesuch – H-71067 Format: Vinyl, LP, Stereo Country: US Released: 1965

Martin's favourite Jochum?
These Dresden recordings don't seem to have held up too well with the passage of the years; ping pong stereo, rather raucous, not much depth - on my system at least. I prefer the older DG cycle for both recordings and performances. But Jochum is always interesting and enjoyable in Bruckner.

I do love Jochum's Bruckner and can ride over some of the poorer recordings.
His 9th needs no apologies, though.

DMM pressing, I always enjoyed those, extended play capability and very quiet surfaces. If all LPs had been like that I might not have been quite so keen to get rid of them!

Philips and Erato - two noble labels with utterly reliable and consistent high sound quality! Yes, it amazes me the quality of some classical LPs you can pick up in charity and 2nd hand shops , each cost me £1

Some, really quite listenable, Penderecki. Not scary at all. A double concerto for violin and viola leads off.
