open.qobuz.com/album/7318590003251Martti Talvela, one of my favourite singers, a superbly unique 'smokey' tonality and astonishing power when required. He was a giant of a man, 6 foot 8 and nigh on 300lb. Sadly died at the age of 54, of a heart attack while dancing at his daughter's wedding. Try his Songs and Dances of Death [Mussorgsky] for a mind blowing demonstration of his awesome abilities. open.qobuz.com/album/7318590003251

George Frederick Bristow. I'd never heard of him before - (1825 – 1898) American composer.
His 2nd symphony is pretty darn wonderful! Big scale Romantic.

Talvela would have been epic in Shostakovich 13th.

That's been one of my fave albums for decades. Totally blown away by Talvela - I didn't even know the work when I got the album, I bought it for the different take on Pictures. Songs aren't usually my thing. And, yes, I really like the Pictures - it is noticeably different from Ravel's orchestration.

.... and earlier, whilst still abed having woken at 5am, listening on my fab Philips Fidelio X2HR headphones. How much sound leakage do you get with these Jerry? I am wondering how much irritation they might cause the Mrs ... Quite a lot of leakage, Jules, they are open back. I wouldn't recommend them if there is someone quite nearby who you don't want to share the higher frequencies with. Apart from IEMs, you'd need a well sealed closed back headphone. I like PSB M4U and B&O H6 for private listening.

True, but they'll be a bit less cool when the Mrs snips the cable.

She wouldn't dare snip my cable - I'd dock her housekeeping and bingo money for a month!
