In the Gramophone 'Beethoven special', lots of mention of various 3rds but no mention of the Marriner, which is, in my opinion, the best of them all.

Yes, Marriner is very good, but so are Hogwood, Bohm, Klemperer, (Roy) Goodman, Karajan, Zinman, Orozco-Estrada - all in their very different ways. (The last 2 on YT). I really like them all! I am sure there are many other great performances - it's such an amazing work.

I've tried to convince myself that this isn't the best Mahler 5 I've ever heard. I failed. Such phrasing and nuanced playing, such depth of feeling.
Student orchestra (OK, so it's the Royal Academy of Music) - Edward Gardner conducting

Yep, that opening solo must be one of the loneliest and exposed in all music. Surrounded by a massive orcheastra and there you are starting it all off on your own.

I am entirely enamoured with the Baroque violin of Chouchane Siranossian. I find her playing to be other worldly ...
Here she is with more Tartini, this time The Devil's Trill at the close of this album.

an utterly magnificent Brahms 1st - my god, the finale - whole body tingling, air conducting like a demented thing I have the Barenboim Brahms saved on spotify - part of an ever increasing 'backlog' to listen to. I'm going to save it for the main system to do it full justice though.

Lockdown - seems a good time to explore Myaskovsky's 27 symphonies.

She has a noble sincerity and depth to her playing, I like it a great deal. I've started exploring her albums. A great find.

Curiously coincidental ... I'd been thinking of the Bach violin concertos' melodies recently but somehow couldn't quite face the too-familiar music ... and up pops this transcription of one of them for piano and mandolin. It really is very effective and has made me fall in love with the music all over again. The other transcribed baroque concerti on the album are also nicely done.

.... and earlier, whilst still abed having woken at 5am, listening on my fab Philips Fidelio X2HR headphones. I rather suspect that John would like this, too. Entrancing and beautiful.
