Playing the CD kindly gifted to me by Jules. Really nice Bach so far. And the Beethoven is quite gentle and flowing - interestingly different.

You are correct sir.
I saw her with the Carducci Quartet just before lockdown and forgot to write review ... Must fix.

CD - excellent live performance at the RFH in 1988 of Mahler 6, superb sq, too - sadly not available streamed, Inoue's later performance on Exton isn't as good

Major discovery yesterday. Barbirolli. Aka Glorious John. In the guise of Mahler's 6th symphony. OK it's a bit slow at times but never ponderous, there's massive inexorability about it and is seemingly hewn from granite. Enjoyed it hugely. Then onto RVW2, very good. Listening in bed with headphones earlier (it was 6am) to his Beethoven 8th, delightfully light on its feet. All earlyish stereo and excellent sound. Will investigate further. I've tried GJ before and not been impressed, probably not heard his Mahler 6 before, that's won me over. Looking forward to trying his Mahler 5 and 9, Schubert 9, Elgar. Weirdly his EMI Brahms symphonies aren't available on Qobuz, I've ordered the CD set. open.qobuz.com/album/5099921296352

not tried that yet - you like it? Yes, I do. I hadn't played it for ages, I sort of "settled" on Dudamel's 5th which took over in my affections from the von Karajan reading, and I hadn't ventured far beyond those two in a while. Barbirolli's take is quite dramatic in places, even, perhaps, tipping over into the melodramatic, but it works. He gets some lovely noises out of the brass section, and the percussion really bangs. The fourth movement is not as cloying as some renditions, and it gets quite wistful towards the middle. I could actually take a little more saccharin, but that's just personal taste. When the whole orchestra hits a crescendo it's a glorious punch to the gut. Tempo-wise it's closer to von Karajan, being a tad slower. Dudamel's version is on steroids though, and quite a bit faster than both. And after that build-up you can now take a listen, and tell me why you don't like it.
