An excellent Mahler 6th from the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra

this is a sleeper of a Mahler 9th, I only came across it as someone on a Mahler Facebook group posted about it. At first listen I found the finale too fast, but it made perfect sense 2nd time around. Great recording imo.

Shostakovich - The 24 Preludes & Fugues - Tatiana Nikolayeva (1962)
A very good re-mastering of this classic recording.

Another irresistible Wang encore, this time a delightfully subversive take on a familiar theme ...
The original version is tricky enough to master but this virtuosity is at a whole different level.

I shall have to listen to that Mahler.
I'll happily watch Wang play anything.

I have to say I'm really looking forward to the full release of this as it's a cracking 3rd movement, full of vitality.

For Jules and Martin.
I think she's a robot - I don't see how a human could play so fast and so accurately.

Practice, practice, practice. And then do it again. Years of building up muscle and muscle memory. I'm amazed how quick my son can play (obviously not this!) ...
I would like to think he has had a childhood as well, not sure about Yuja - must have lived and breathed music since birth.

The illustrious Miss Khatia B discusses Schumann with Paavo Jarvi and then performs the PC in Tokyo, where you really understand what they are talking about.
The minute long sequence from 18-03 exemplifies her power and poise in equal measure. So delicate at the start of the 2nd. Thrilling finale.
Kudos to the excellent oboist too ... Top notch, but rather glum looking orchestra!

The Schumann PC certainly suits the Romantic approach that KB takes to music. A wonderful performance.
Mind you, Paavo Jarvi is one of the top conductors around today, imo, and that certainly helps things along. They work well together.

Nice cover design too ... what's the verdict Jerry? 6th and first half of the 8th so far .... very good, good sound, too. Russia's state run recording company (or is Melodiya privately owned now?) with Russia's greatest composer. They must be serious about it! Worth a listen. Where did they dig these folks up from?!? - maybe they're famous in Russia? Seems unlikely. Well, they probably are famous now.
