Somebody had to start a thread. Yes, really, somebody had to. I'm already enjoying it and intend to watch as many matches as I can. The opportunity to see the top players and the top national teams in the game is too good to miss for a footy-lover such as me. Is anyone else actually looking forward to the joys to come over the next four weeks? This being an online forum I obviously expect answers from people who are in what would likely be considered as the opposite of the group I have targeted with this post. Furthermore, I shall take as read that none of their comments will actually address the question I asked. Thank you for your indulgence.

I always enjoy the World Cup and try to watch as much as poss ...
I thought it was good for the tournament that Russia got off to such as flyer, especially as they are supposedly the worst team in Russian history or suchlike! Some superb goals in that game.
Looking forward to Portugal v Spain, hope it lives up to expectations ....

Is anyone else actually looking forward to the joys to come over the next four weeks? Didn't even realise it was about to start, until I saw a poster outside a gig venue on Wednesday advertising England v Tunisia!
Not for me Slinger.

Portugal v Spain - that's what you watch the World Cup for ... It was a great game! The only thing I query is the penalty early doors - the officials have been told to ignore tight calls because VAR is in use (allegedly), and the referee waded straight in and awarded the penalty, thus rendering VAR void for the incident.
Ronaldo should have been awarded an Oscar on the spot for his part - the ball was going out and was beyond his control at the point he dangled his leg to make contact ....

But what about the VAR in this morning's game with France and Australia - that was a tough one to call even with the replays ...
Great to see teams going for the win in the first game again - the opening games in previous tournaments have often been very cagey and unadventurous.

I'm counting that as a moral victory to the Aussies. As somebody in the studio said after the match, four years ago (i.e. before the introduction of VAR) that could easily have ended 1 - 0 to Australia. It would have been the wrong result, but I for one would have liked it better. Up the underdogs. Come on Iceland!

For anyone who doesn't want to watch footy, but who does want to support England, at 17:30 (18:00 Kick Off) on ITV4 this evening the England U20 rugby team take on France in the final of the Under 20 Rugby World Championship.

I think this is the funniest piece of World Cup news I've read so far. According to the coach of South Korea, for their last two warm-up matches, he made his players swap shirt numbers "to confuse opponents," who he said, "cannot tell them apart." What a great way to use a stereotype against the 백인.

There's something suspicious about the South Korea away strip at this World Cup. I want to know why so much of their shirts have been redacted.

I heard that Polish supporters went on a rampage in Moscow. They polished, washed, and waxed about 300 cars.

I always delight in seeing England get knocked out. England doing well seems to bring a lot of plebs out of the woodwork. I look forward to seeing them crawl back out of sight and take their flags, noise, beer bellies and tattoos with them.

Argentina are suffering at this World Cup. They've got a superstar in Messi, and 22 average players. After a 1-1 draw with Iceland and now a 3-0 defeat to Croatia they're clinging on by their fingernails. I actually feel sorry for Messi.
[EDIT] Now that I've had more time to consider what I wrote above, I think it's actually "us" that I feel sorry for, because we've been deprived of watching the greatest player of our generation performing to his fullest ability on the world stage.

22 average players? That's BS!
The entire camp is not a happy one, and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Jorge Sampaoli is Argentina's equivalent of Fabio Capello (ie the entire problem). There might well be a load of Argentinians on the field, but to call it a team is stretching it a fair bit. The players out there last night looked to be held back by the weight of the shirt ....
