That is interesting! It obviously depends on the hardware it's sensing.
One thing is for sure: 'Software' will be the worst for sacrificing bits of data at low volumes so you want to avoid that. My DAC processes all data in 32-bit words so there is no data degradation at low volumes using its volume control, one of the nice features of the ES9038 chipset.

Yeah, on the Volumio app home page I have volume set to 100% and control volume thru my pre-amp. I found out the hard way one day when somehow my Volumio app re-set the mixer to ‘none’ and while the Volumio app showed 100% volume my volume was way down from normal listening levels at my pre-amp. I freaked. Thought my streamer had blown something. Anyway, cast about and tried the ‘hardware’ setting (not remembering the former setting and with Volumio defaulting back to ‘none’) and voila la the Volumio app showed volume at 70%. Rolled it up to 100% and all was well again. Whew!

Volumio will sense the USB device in your Caiman DAC which, from recollection (I don't have my Caiman anymore), is the DigiHub one that you see.

Tinker Board is compatible with a Pi but not most of the hat boards. Digihub should do it for USB in.

The faff that is Volumio got me tonight! Not able to connect / see it in the attached devices list.
Risk of powering off not being able to know it's ready to be shutdown! I've done the - time it between green led flashes, before.
Oh well, it might come back next time, once I power cycle yet again or I might just give up on it for good this time!

Sometimes an SD card can get screwed. Worth burning another one?

Reading the information it is only likely to play 3/4 of the video
Playback The plugin uses MPD for playing a video's audio stream. The current version of Volumio still ships with a really outdated version of MPD that is not entirely compatible with these streams. So, while a stream will still play, you will likely encounter the following: Playback abruptly ends at ~3/4 into the stream. Seeking is not possible at all. Until Volumio Buster is officially released (which is expected to include a recent version of MPD), here's a temporary workaround (note: no guarantee that it will not break certain aspects of Volumio - use at own risk).

Not any more. I'm using SonicOrbiter (Sonore) with a DLNA controller.

I'm still using Volumio, it suits my purposes perfectly. I only replay files from a brace of Synology NAS boxes rather than streaming external sources so don't need whistles and bells.

Just started using it on a ATB, but mainly use Spotify Connect, and configured my logitech media server to use it a a Upnp endpoint as the squeezesoft player plugin is supported on ATB.

Roll call - who is still using (suffering) Volumio? Nope, can't complain about it's sound quality, just too clunky for me. I'm totally on-board with Roon now
