I’ve finally had time to listen to some tracks via the Tinkerboard S. Aside from the software being more responsive two things strike me:
1) bass...this is in my AV system with floor-standing Viotti Towers. With music from the Pi3B I’m usually torn between using the subwoofer or not. Now it’s definitely a “not”...only for movies now.
2) the sound is more “assured”.
This is my 2nd system of 3, it’s one use for music fairly often. BTW I’m using a Temple Supercap PS into the Tinker but other tweaks. This is into a Qutest also Temple Supercap powered.

Do try and ground it in some way Clive it will take it up a few steps and put it on some decent isolation.

I’ve grounded the Tinker. Nothing fancy...just a wire from a blank USB plug to the chassis of the Supercharger PS, so simply mains earth. Bass is super tight now and the overall sound is so powerful and cleaner too. Differences between recordings are very easy to hear..which is always a great sign. Not bad for a 2nd system though it does include MarkaudioSota Viotti Towers and a modern Claymore amp being fed by a Qutest DAC. As 2nd systems go it’s not too bad at all!
Oh it’s good to not feel the PD (due to floating PS) on the Samsung SSD metal case, it needed grounding. Spotify, Qobuz and DLNA server are all working well too.

Yes...and it can't be good to have either a Pi or Tinkerboard running without a ground. Few setups will have ground on the shield USB power line, even with SMPS there will rarely be a main earth connection as the mains earth is usually plastic.

What are your views on upsampling within Volumio fellas? I tried it some time ago and preferred native format to the DAC, possibly because it makes the streamer work much harder. However, I haven't tried it more recently.

What are your views on upsampling within Volumio fellas? I think it only upsamples on local files. It used to make a big difference with my NOS DAC but that's due to the DAC. The Tinker doesn't struggle with upsampling but I've not yet compared with and without. Maybe I will tonight.

I have only recently come back to Volumio after using Moode for quite a while and discovered this option last night. Only listened for 10 mins at 32 768, so not much time to evaluate. There appeared to be more detail with an overall leaner sound, will experiment further.

FWIW I've got my Volumio installation set to retain the Native (Target) Bit Depth, my Target Sample Rate is set to 176.4 and the Resampling Algorithm Quality is "Very High." I prefer "natural" dividers and have convinced myself 176.4 sounds better than 192.

That only works for multiples of 44.1kHz, though. For files based on 48kHz, then 192 will be better!

It could do with simply being 4x but then the player would need to restart when a different sample rate was encountered.

You can upsample at the streamer or leave it native and the DAC chipset (with a few exceptions) will oversample. Both will push quantisation nasties well out of the audio spectrum.
That leaves the question: does your digital chain transport low bitrate or high bitrate data with greater fidelity?

If your DAC has digital filters, Paul, I would leave upsampling turned off. That'll give the Asus less work to do. Then enable either Minimum Phase or, better still, Apodising filter in the DAC. This automatically oversamples in the DAC, which has far better number crunching power and attempts to reduce pre-ringing, making the music sound more natural.

I have an old Atom Samsung Netbook that's not been used in probably 6 years, maybe more, not sure . . . but it's been awhile. Anyhoots, took the back off and bunged a 64GB SSD in, checked the RAM, it has 2GB so thought 'that'll do'. Then I plugged it in (after taking an age to find the PSU), crossed my fingers and bashed away on F2. Amazingly it fired up, so after checking over the BIOS and altering the Boot order for a USB stick I stuck my Volumio USB in and bingo. Next I installed the O/S to the SSD and restarted - it boots faster than the Intel board too, just over 30s.
Now I have 2 Volumio music players and I'm chuffed to bits to be using what I thought were dufunct bits of Tech. What is really great is I didn't realise all my settings are there from the USB. So I have no messing around to do, it's all been done. It's charging the battery right now, but it'll be interesting to see if running it from just the battery makes any difference?
