Certainly working for me as a front-end. With Kali reclocker and I2S it all adds up

As I said earlier, it outperforms my Ayre player of old, but then the reclocking and DAC pull way ahead now. Martin, I have been pondering this for a couple of days... I conclude that the benefits are down to the change of emphasis and where the effort is being focused. My recollection of a potted history of CD playback: - Late 80's legwarmers and Digital is digital, CD players are just boxes
- Ah! some players (possibly the expensive ones) sound better than others, need to listen to them and read reviews
- Oh... CD players are really two parts... transport and DAC
- Maybe better to have an (expensive?) box for each one
- DACs are (expensive?) black boxes, need to listen to them and read reviews
- fast forward to 2019... the DAC is now a white box... there are lots of promising DACs, some of them very reasonably priced
- What effect on sound does fettling the power supply, clock, screening, smoothing, isolation, DAC chip, digital interface have??? I will fiddle until I find out!
I conclude that the cheap CD drive can be made to sound good, because you now understand, at a component level, where the limitations are and what can be done to improve them.
Cheers
Sean

What effect on sound does fettling the power supply, clock, screening, smoothing, isolation, DAC chip, digital interface have??? I will fiddle until I find out! My Ayre SACD player was a great player. However, it used 15 year old DAC technology. The crystal was oven regulated, not anything near femtoclock standard. What has remained the same is laser tracking and error correction: the Pioneer DVD mech in the Ayre was roughly the same as the lightweight mech in my cheapo laptop drivein terms of data read quality. By using reclocking at both ends, I2S data transfer, regulated supercap power supplies, attention to noise and shielding, and the latest dual mono 9038 chipset implementation, the sound is far in advance of what the Ayre could achieve. By adding a cheap CD player, you get the same replay benefits so I'm not surprised that it sounds that good.

I tried again to perform an in-place update. I performed a Factory Reset and then Checked and set it to update. After a while, it rebooted itself. I got it to restart (still on 2.572) and did the update again. Crash rebooted again.
I am done with in-place update attempts!
Back to burning 2.575 onto the SD card.

It's a shame I don't use either the Virtuoso or Superstar plan.

2.575 now setup, Spotify fixed index.js installed, Qobuz and Spotty working superbly. OneDrive files playing, too.
Just waiting for the dual USB laptop drive to arrive and I can play CDs, too.

Hi guys, I've got a question on Volumio. I'm using version 2.555 and it is working fine, however I'm curious on what a few of your settings are under 'General Playback Options'.
For example my Katana came with the volume set at 45. I corrected that by switching 'Default Startup Volume' to 100. Anyway, I'm curious on the following other options.
DSP Program = ? Deemphasis = ? DSD Auto Volume Level =? Auto Buffer Size = ? Buffer Before Play = ?
Thanks!

My LKS DAC has very similar settings. I use Minimum Phase Slow as I prefer the reconstruction waveform to have ringing after the transient, rather than before it, for more realistic dynamics and a goodly amount of soundstage.
It's worth experimenting but the differences are small.

A few titbits from the latest Volumio newsletter relating to the "Munich High-End" show... We all need certainties in life, and for us of Volumio Team, attending High-End Munich fair has been one of those, since 4 years. But this time, it will be different. This time, it will be special. We are so proud to announce that, for the first time, Volumio will join Munich High-End show as an exhibitor! Yes, we will have our own booth!!
VOLUMIO MOTIVO WORLD PREMIERE
It's well over one year since we started working on a new, groundbreaking streamer. Its name is Motivo. It’s a joint cooperation between Volumio, visionary engineering firm Yottamusic and world-class industrial design firm Design Narratives. We gathered together around a simple vision: to create the next-generation Audiophile Streamer, with a completely new approach to audio processing and with the ultimate usability.
Motivo in italian means Meaning. And Motivo is our statement to what enjoying music means to us. You will know everything about Motivo in Munich, where we will display for the first time our early prototypes.
Did I already mention it is a thing of beauty?
VOLUMIO LINEO WORLD PREMIERE You asked for it, we made it. We are ready to bring to market a Linear Power Supply, designed to give the Volumio Primo (and all 5V apparatus) the cleanest possible power. You will have the chance to see it paired with the Primo in Munich
NEW USER INTERFACE REDESIGN Our beloved user interface has been serving us wonderfully over those years, but we thought it was time to give it a nice refreshing.
Following the many suggestions from our community and our OEM partners we are performing an overhaul of the User Interface structure and adding quite a lot of usability tweaks. We are also laying the groundworks for an extended navigation capability, leveraging an all-new metadata system. For those attending, we will be showing a sneak preview of the new interface at our booth.

Excellent - all good things. More power to them for their continuous development. This is why I don't mind paying the small amount for Virtuoso subscription and for the Android app. After all, it's my primary source now.

2.587 (15-06-2019)
FIXES
- Fix addition of Webradios, Playlists and Favourite Radios under some circumstances
- Add Shoutcast to Webradios search Options
Interestingly, I'm not getting the old refusal to update because of my modified config.txt error any more, it now installs the update straight over the top. It does overwrite my modified config.txt but at least I only have to reload it now instead of having to change it to the standard version before I upgrade and then reload it afterwards. For anyone who uses it to modify their config.txt there's a new version of WinSCP out too - 5.15.2

Thanks, Paul. I wonder what the 'fix playlists' is all about? What I would love is the ability to add a song to a Qobuz playlist directly from Volumio, instead of having to switch to the Qobuz app. It's a small thing but would be handy.
As for updating, I DREAM of being able to update the SD card in place!

It's worth experimenting but the differences are small. That's a good get Martin. Played around with it and Minimum Phase Slow Roll Off produces a wider polished soundstage. Thanks ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
