I'm experimenting with using an old 11" tablet, running stripped down Android and the Volumio app, as a repeater display in front of the system. I need to rig up 5V to keep it powered up but the principle works fine in that you can have the Volumio app running on two devices, one controlling and the other displaying.
Of course, a larger 12" display would be ideal but they don't come cheap.

Err, I was hoping for a longer service life than that

I tend to run the volumio app either/or/and the spotify app across my phone, el-cheapo fire tablet and PC. I have even had some success in using voice via Alexa to control Spotify playing on the Raspberry Pi. I tend to operate whichever one is nearest at the time.
In this respect, it all works a lot like Sonos did... (I dabbled with this a few years back... I like the ease of use across rooms/platforms very much)
Cheers Sean

Balbuze? He's on the Volumio forum but didn't address that specific issue. Ah, right. I remember you saying you'd raised it with Michelangelo, I didn't know if you'd messaged 'Balbuze' personally. I alternate between CD and Volumio, mostly because I've got a (big) box of unplayed CDs. Hi Paul, I have just put together an RPi/Dac and was wondering if there is a SPDIF input option for playing CD's from a transport. Are you using a stand alone CD player, or is it ripped files you are playing?

I seem to remember one of the S/PDIF output boards has a place for S/PDIF input. Ah yes, the HiFiBerry Digi+. Look at the solder positions for Toslink and co-ax inputs.

Are you using a stand alone CD player, or is it ripped files you are playing? I'm using the Pi/Volumio with ripped files from a NAS and a standalone CD player, The Pi is using an outboard DAC and the CD player is straight into my amp. Amp and CD player are both Primare and are, supposedly, matched to some degree - hence the direct connection rather than going via a separate DAC. When you say you've "just put together" an RPi/DAC do you mean you're running a Pi into an outboard DAC? Your question has confused me (my normal state, truth be told) a little. If so, then Martin has your answer - the Digi+.

I have a HifiBerry + I'm not going to use, if you'd like it?

A tentative yes, however I am not sure I could include it with hat Dac running as well. I'm guessing it would probably involve some programming which atm is beyond me.
I'm using Volumio, is this likely to work?

I'm not sure about that. I guess it's a limitation of having a built-in DAC rather than an external one.
Are there any Pi DACs with S/PDIF inputs? Although how you'd switch them programmatically is another question.

I never knew this version of the HIFIBERRY DAC+ existed... www.hifiberry.com/shop/boards/hifiberry-dac-dsp/It still doesn't solve any problems, but it's interesting. The "switching" thing is the stumbling block I kept coming up against when thinking about this post.

Does the HiFiBerry route the input through automatically if there is no Pi generated output?

Another question, apologies if this has been answered before. What is the maximum size storage that can be connected to each USB port?
My 1.5Tb disc is totally ignored.

I don't think there is a maximum? Certainly I've had my 2TB drive working in the past.
Did you power up the Pi with the drive connected? It doesn't always 'see' drives connected after it's running.

I'm going to pass on this one as it doesn't affect how I'm using mine.

I saw that and will go for it as it affects Qobuz. I shall burn it on a super-fast Samsung SD card (Evo Plus 32) that just arrived today.
