. . . it made me wonder whether there are a lot of mediocre digital playback components out there being used as a reference with which to judge digital as a whole. For sure there are, not so much here maybe, but on other forums, most certainly. The negative naysayers often quantify this by saying they have tried it and it's no good, confirming their negative bias. However, when you find they have ripped a CD in a lossy format, then played it through Windows Media Player or iTunes on their day to day computer/laptop into a cheap (or none) DAC, for sure it's going to sound mediocre. They need to hear a well set-up system, preferably from someone who also enjoys vinyl, before making a final judgement. I think there's more fear of it than a lot are prepared to admit to? I remember one pompous pillock member declare "I take the superiority of vinyl over digital for granted" (not here by the way )
Of course there will always be a preference as in anything and it's not for everyone, but to declare vinyl better than digital (or vice versa) is moot, as it's a preference not a fact. A few years ago I heard a 401 fronted system which I guess tallied up to around 15K cost wise, the cartridge alone cost nearly 10x the price of my Rega DAC and yet it sounded more 'digital' than my digital system! Clinical is how I would describe it and I didn't like it at all. In fact it lacked all the so called qualities which make 'vinyl better than digital' - warmer, more organic, more lifelike - well I didn't hear any of that.
At the end of the day though, it really matters not whether you enjoy vinyl, CD, file based or R2R, just enjoy what you enjoy, but to stubbornly dismiss it because you are a purist is rather blinkered and potentially cuts you off from discovering some music you might really like, which is a shame.
I don't really mind how I hear something if it's good and of an acceptable standard, be that vinyl, CD or files

As always, put very simplistically, it comes down to the difference between people who listen to their music, and people who listen to their hi-fi.

Listening and bopping away (not a pleasant sight) to Pete Shelley - XL1 on the Pioneer/SMSL/TDL system while making grub made me want to hear it deliver some welly on Spotify/Belles/TAD system. I want the music - more of it and the oomph the big rig gives Spotty not working for god knows what reason so I'm in a quandary Do I walk all the way back to bring the CD in ...? Finish off Mott - All the young dudes first mebbe

Setting up Spotify connect in volumio is not easy Mike as you need to go through putty I think it is a backward step going back to this method.

I would agree entirely. My preference is 100% analogue - I only use spoti for 'casual' listening. And that's only what it is, my personal preference - I'm not dissing anyone who prefers digital.

In a nutshell, 'digital can sound great' as per the original proposition, and as Tony C aptly demonstrated to me this morning! But my preference is always for analogue.

. . . people who listen to their music, and people who listen to their hi-fi. haha, steady there Paul It's something I've always said, Tim. Music always comes first for me, and the pain in the arse that is hi-fi is a means to an end. I'm not saying you shouldn't have the best "means" you can assemble, but in the end, it's all about the "end."

The iPad is irrelevant, Mike. It's just another browser. Volumio have changed the rules for 3rd party plug-ins so installing the latest Spotify Connect plug-in takes a little work. The one that comes with Volumio is very basic and may not work.

. . . the pain in the arse that is hi-fi is a means to an end. So it's not just me then?
I guess that's the hobby part (tinkering with the gear), as I've never thought of my love as music as a hobby.

I listened to my Logitech Squeezebox Touch for the first time in ages through the Caiman SEG last night, and I was quite surprised how good it sounded. Yes it doesn't have the clarity or depth of the CXC transport, but it did sound pretty good. Show's streaming can work, even for little money. Now to try a Pi!
