I had a hot chocolate instead. With a similar sugar content to dessert wine?

I had a hot chocolate instead. With a similar sugar content to dessert wine? Not so, I'm drinking the "Options" Vegan stuff, which is rated at 2.0g of sugar per serving. Not only that, but I'm cutting out one spoonful of Options and replacing it with Sainsbury's Cocoa, which only contains 0.6g of sugar per 100g, so less than 0.5g per serving. Whack a couple of Hermesetas in to sweeten it, and I'm good to go.

Yes but how did it taste Paul??
I'm on a most noble quest, to taste different dessert wines from around the world. Thoroughly enjoying the Spanish, I had a Monbazillac from France the other week. Wasn't the best example and not fit to be mentioned in the same company as a good Sauternes. I might come back to it in the future.

This is worth a try. Don't be put off by the low price. www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-moscatel-de-valencia--spanish-75cl

You even get a man-sized 75cl - what's not to like, lol.

Next in my global tour of dessert wine is another Muscat, but this time from the Greek island of Samos. Utterly delicious, it has the typical ripe, luscious apricot and peach flavours but with an unexpected extra element - a very subtle and nuanced note of sweet strawberry! Another heady delight at 15°.

I thought their Options were way overpriced at £4 a tub.

I thought their Options were way overpriced at £4 a tub. £4.50, and I couldn't agree more. That's why I only buy the stuff at £2.50, and replacing one spoonfull with organic cacao powder (Amazon £9.95/1Kg) brings down the calories, and the price, even further.

I must add, I've been playing around with a " formula" to make my own hot chocolate, but it'll cost me more than the £2.50 a tub for Options when it's on offer at around £15.00/Kg as opposed to £12.50/Kg As well as the obvious Cacao and powdered milk it involves "proper" Vanilla powder (expensive) and Corn Flour. I was surprised by the Corn Flour/Cornstarch, but apparently that's what makes the finished texture " creamy". If I start running out of Options I will give it a go, but at the moment I'm well supplied. I do like hot chocolate, and virtually guilt-free hot chocolate tastes even better.

Tonight I'm drinking an incredibly rich, deep and luscious Moscatel de Alejandria that has just a hint of nuttiness mingling with the gloriously ripe marmalade nectar. Sublime.

Look out for a bottle - one of the great bargains in wine IMO.

Yesterday we celebrated my son's 18th birthday with a bottle of Chateau Lynch-Bages 1982. I bought this over 30 years ago and have waited for the ideal opportunity to open and this was it.
I was really nervous about opening it because it hasn't been stored in a cellar or temperature controlled environment. The cork came out in two pieces, not a great start. I was prepared for the wine to completely "disintegrate" on opening and mixing with air but had a sip and amazingly enough it was entirely correct and not showing any signs of poor storage. It held up incredibly well actually and another surprise was how much it improved over an hour or so and took on many more layers of complexity - absolutely delicious. All the tannins were dissolved and we were just left with a really harmonious Bordeaux with notes of cedar, graphite and violet.

Today my dessert wine odyssey moves to France. Château La Rame is in the Sainte Croix du Mont region of Bordeaux and produces a quite delicious wine using the same grapes as Sauternes but not quite as unctuous, rich and honeyed. As such it's actually rather refreshing on the palate.

I'm drinking a 2018 late harvest Royal Tokaji.
Initially underwhelming if you're expecting a heavy dessert wine, it doesn't have the oiliness and intensity of the Spanish moscatels but is a more subtle and beautifully balanced wine that takes a little time to savour its gentle complexity ...

I'm not a beer fan but the other week I came across this San Miguel 0% in a restaurant and as I was driving, I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did as it's just a superbly refreshing drink with great flavour. I would choose this over a beer with alcohol any day. It's going to be a regular in my fridge the rest of the summer as I found it in Waitrose. And for those watching their weight like me it's a great choice as sugars and calories are exceptionally low.

Tonight I'm enjoying Slovenian Riesling!
I actually bought it by accident on a rare foray to our rather underwhelming local Oddbins - didn't read the label properly and assumed it was German. It's deliciously clean and crisp summer wine with a hint of sweetness, great VFM.

I've just ordered a bottle of this stuff, apparently a "full bodied" red. I'm tentatively placing in the same class as dessert wines, being the same ABV as the delicious Moscatel I'll be bunging on a Sainsbury's order sometime before Christmas to go with my pud(s). The reviews range from to So it should be interesting if nothing else. Jules, any thoughts?

I think it will be Marmite, Paul!
Kourtaki produce cheap table wines, a huge amount of which are exported. Expect a lot of flavour but not much in the way of subtlety - whether you like it or not I couldn't guess ...
