Not a whisky, but this Polish vodka tasted so rich and wonderful, with overtones of whisky, earlier this evening that I thought it worth mentioning. I'm going to see if I can bring back a bottle.

It's not a supermarket we go into very often at all, but today we had to visit an Asda and I spotted that they have the standard version of the Polish Zubrowka Bison Grass vodka for an incredibly reasonable £15 a bottle. We got a taste for it from our first visit to Poland - Nice!

As there's an exclusive thread for Scotch-lovers I thought the least I could do is start one for the recommendation and appreciation every other sort of spirit This thread was prompted by my spotting of this gin in a 'lightening deal' on Amazon. I'm not usually an impulse buyer, and I actually drink very little these days, but I couldn't resist. 43% proof gin, made with Amalfi and Sicilian lemons, and a brace of rather pretty glasses and it was selling for just under 28 quid instead of just over 46 for the gift set. I could have got the gin, on its own, for a couple of quid more, but the pretty glasses swung the deal. I am SO shallow sometimes. Tonic water will be added to the Sainsbury's order this week. As a postscript, if this is as nice as it sounds I may be tempted to try the version, from the same manufacturer, made with blood oranges. I rather fancy a couple of the Whitley Neill range too. They produce a Quince Gin, and a Rhubarb & Ginger Gin, also both 43% proof.

I've merged two vodka posts from the whiskey thread, just trying to get Paul's post to the top.

That confused the Hell out of me, Martin. I was trying to work out how two had people posted in the thread before I'd created it.

LOL! Afraid I failed, will see if ProBoards can help.
Meanwhile, the top post features a vodka you MUST try before you die!

The lemon gin has just arrived, and, unable to resist the temptation, I poured a little into one of the glasses that came with the set. "High octane lemon sherbets" is my immediate reaction. There's a nice warmth to it, a fresh, lemony, aftertaste and it would be all too easy to pour a full glass, put some music on, and forget doing anything for the rest of the day. It does not require tonic water, although if you're intending to spend any time in the company of this gin I'd probably recommend it as it would be all too easy to get drunk, very quickly and very pleasantly. I think it would also make a very nice Negroni. A definite success, and nowhere near as 'subtle' as I was expecting, Malfy's 'Con Arancia' (blood orange) gin is definitely next on my list.

Ouzo and Metaxa 5 star brandy from Greece. Perfect for holiday drinks.

This was definitely a good buy.
G&T has always been my "Summer" drink, and with the weather today I have fooled myself into believing it is, indeed, Summer.
So, some Holst on the Hi-Fi and I'm enjoying a glass right now.
I fear that the "Con Arancia" variation may need to be purchased sooner than I was expecting. |

Ouzo and Metaxa 5 star brandy from Greece. Perfect for holiday drinks. Can't do the Metaxa 5 star - way too sweet for me. Have you tried Tsipouro Martin? Over in Greece my father-in-law is a regular imbiber - I don't have it often, it's exceptionally strong but I much prefer it to Ouzo, although can have a similar aniseed taste. Home-made normally best of course ... From wiki - Anise-flavoured tsipouro is also available, produced especially in Macedonia and Thessaly. Anise-flavoured tsipouro and ouzo have almost identical taste but vary enormously in their method of production. The alcohol used to produce ouzo is 96% ABV ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin (rectified spirit obtained from agricultural products) and therefore does not retain the flavours of the primary distilled products, whereas the lower degree of distillation of tsipouro allows it to retain the aroma of the pomace.

...I fear that the "Con Arancia" variation may need to be purchased sooner than I was expecting. I know the problem well - you need to be careful in this weather. Tip: Try to remember to put the lid on after you have finished pouring or it will just evaporate away in all the heat. It catches me out all the time. That, and those bottles with the big dimple on the bottom with only enough room in them for a couple of very modestly sized beverages.

My current weapon of choice, very complex due to its 47 botanicals hence the name.

I've never come across this one, Roger. I'm a confirmed Bombay lover, but I'll look out for this.

I don't drink much these days. I used to drink quite a lot and I often worked as a barman (mostly before I was married) helping out friends who owned pubs, in the main. Those days are gone, now, and I'm enjoying a drink rather than drinking. I still pour rather large (in itself, a rather large - understatement) measures at home, but I'm happy to stop at one now. The idea of trying more "flavoured" gins intrigues me though. I'm particularly taken with the thought of that Con Arancia (with Blood Oranges) and the Quince gin. There's also a "Marmalade" that sounds very interesting.

These two likely looking lads turned up today: Mr. Rhubarb & Ginger and Mr. Quince. I'm trying to decide whether to be good and wait until all of the lemon gin is gone or if I really should sample both of these first. Just to make sure I like them, you understand.
