Is the performance of the new Mercedes engine an ominous sign for the rest of the field? Not really: look at Williams and Force India. Fair point, they weren't miles ahead by any stretch were they.. The Williams team have totally lost their way this year. It is a real shame to see both them and McLaren disappearing into the history books

In both cases it's not the engine. Their aero design is sadly lacking and they need to refresh their design teams before they go bust - a distinct possibility.

Totally, I am shocked and how far behind they both are, with McLaren the most disappointing after all the hype around them moving to Renault. It just to show that their aero package wasn't as good as they thought.

Nice to see Bottas on pole, with Hamilton completing the front row. Vettel has made his work tougher, again, with a three-place penalty for impeding Sainz. The Red Bulls are surprisingly off the pace but Ferrari are right there in the mix.
As for McLaren, Williams and now Force India, a day to forget.

A perfect drive by Max, he did everything right to put himself in the position to capitalize on the performance of others.

Great mature drive by Max. Pity for Mercedes, they need to get on top of their reliability, but more important, their terrible strategy decisions!

Indeed, not a good day for Mercedes. Alonso did well to get 8th - he is out-driving that car.

Yes, although I suspect this will be the last year for Alonso in F1.
Raikkonen to McLaren next year?... what about Ricciardo, I suspect he will resign for Red Bull personally.

I think Ricciardo will re-sign with Red Bull (the hyphen is important)!
Raikkonen will retire back into other car series, perhaps back to rallying. Alonso to IndyCar or similar?
Hamilton and Bottas to stay at Mercedes.
Leclerc goes to Ferrari.
Williams - perhaps they can still look for one decent driver? Oh, and a decent car?
Lando Norris to McLaren. What of Vandoorn?

It was just a matter of time. Leadership comes from the top and, although it certainly wasn't all his fault, he lacked the necessary drive to get things sorted rather than make excuses.

"McLaren chief executive officer Zak Brown said: "The performance of the MCL33 in 2018 has not met the expectations of anyone at McLaren, especially our loyal fans. This is not the fault of the hundreds of committed and hard-working men and women at McLaren.
"The causes are systemic and structural, which require major change from within. With today's announcement, we start to address those issues head on and take the first step on our road to recovery."
Yes, the causes are systemic and structural. But yes also, it is the fault of everyone at McLaren. Shared success goes both ways.

Glad Eric Boullier is out. I always got the impression his days were numbered once Zak Brown got promoted to CEO. Oh and the 2018 car is embarrassingly bad given they kept telling everyone that the chassis was excellent, it was just the engine causing all of the issue. Well that has come home to roost now, hasn't it!

Both ways, as the Toro Rosso Honda isn't a bad car at all compared with the McLaren Renault!

Nice Pole Position, that was definitely a Lewis Hamilton special.

That was epic, it's clear that he threw everything into that. The Ferraris are ominously close.

I wonder what Hamilton meant by "interesting tactics"? Did he really think that Raikkonen taking him off was deliberate?
Regardless, fantastic recovery today by him from last to come 2nd. Vettel drove a flawless race to the win.
The rest of the season could go to either of them, although Ferrari have never looked stronger.
