Yes, best finish ever. They were saying, previous years winning he'd not won a race after becoming champ.
But for that China off on the slippery pit lane gravel he'd be at 6 now.. the experience that gave him was invaluable of course.

I still remember Ron Dennis on that day. Frustrated, annoyed, completely defeated.

Another big shunt. Not F1 but F3. This is one of the most dramatic crashes I've seen in years. Sophia Floersch had successful surgery for spinal injuries.. flying back to Germany now.. globalnews.ca/video/4674962/sophia-floersch-injured-in-horrific-crash-at-f3-grand-prix-in-macauSoon all open cockpit formulas will have Halo or similar.. and even better safety. I'm not saying Halo would have made for injury free in this one but I bet any driver would have sooner been in a Halo car, than not, in that shunt..

I saw a video of this crash and it honestly looked more like something you’d see on a Scalextric set rather than real life, scary.

Yeah! She was initially launched by the sausage kerb apparently. They are evil things..
This is the crash that made me put a full roll cage on my Caterham 7 as soon as I could once racing. These were just Roadsports 1600cc powered 7's on road tyres. My big tuned VX 7 on slicks could potentially have had a much bigger accident. A hoop just won't do.. Any wheel off onto you be cockpit or upside down against the barrier / tyres and you are smush.. He was shaken and well stirred but perfectly okay..
It's on my Youtube channel that I never use or add too..

It's the end of the F1 season again and last year I did a little right up, so thought I would indulge you all once again.
Lewis did a great job and is again a very worthy champion, he had some less impressive races in the first half of the season, but stepped up his game a lot throughout the second half. Bottas was a good number 2 to Lewis, but became quite lacklustre near the end of the campaign, which I think has a lot to do with the relentless speed and consistency of Lewis, but also that he possibly lost believe that he was anything but a No. 2 driver as the year progressed. The Mercedes was the 2nd fastest car for a lot of the car, but the Mercedes team are still the ones to beat, they are like a well oiled engine.
Vettel had a great start to the year, but after his unforced error at Gemany just seemed to loose something and from then on looked like a shadow of his former self. Do we think he will ever be Champion again?, I think it is quite unlikely now unless Ferrari pull something out of the bag next year. Raikkonen had a pretty good year, and I think at times the Ferrari management must have been wondering whether they made the right choice keeping Vettel for next year and letting Raikkonen go. Ferrari as a team were still very shaky at times, they made a number of bad strategic calls, including going missing for a few races in the second half of the season and just need to up their stability.
Vestappen was pretty attrociaous for initial races of the first half of the season, but once he had sorted out his demons and started to drive more consistently, he stepped up his game significantly and I think given the right car he will be a real threat to Lewis and Vettel next year. Ricciardo had a torrid time with reliability this year and I think that got to him by the end of the campaign. He also didn't seem to be able to keep up with Verstappen, which possibly dented his confidence. Red Bull though, obviously put all of their effort into Vestappen from the beginning of the year, and that will likely be the reason that Ricciardo decided enough was enough. Red Bull likely still have the best car aerodinamically, so next year could be interesting with the Honda engine, assuming it is reliable.
Hulkenberg was a solid performer throughout this year and I will be interested to see how he copes with Ricciardo joining the team next year, but he still hasn't managed a podium and whilst I think he is a good driver, he doesn't strike me a potential great. He did outdo the highly regarded Sainz throughout most of the year though, so that was interesting. Sainz has a tough challenge next year at McLaren, and I hope it makes him shine, because I though he looked a lot more average than before this year. Renault have a interesting year next season. If they can get the speed and reliability, they might just be knocking at the door of the top three teams.
Grosjean runs hot and cold at extreme levels, the first half of the season he was nowhere and there was talk of him being replaced at points throughout the season, but he stepped up well throughout the second half. Magnussen is good and pretty consistent, another good but I very much great driver. He does like to get himself into all of the skirmishes though. Haas or Ferrari mk.2 are a great second rung team and I think that's exactly where they will stay.
Alonso showed signs of brilliance again this year, but by the end of the campaign it was clear his time in F1 had come to an end (for now?). He overqualified his teammate in every session and had some interesting races. Vandoorne was lacklustre throughout the year and thoroughly thrashed by Alonso in every area. Let's see how well he does in Formula E. The McLaren team need to pull their finger out, they are embarrassing themselves and their heritage. Hopefully Zak Brown has it in him to lead the team forward, but I am not so sure.
Perez had a good solid year, I didn't like the way in which he behavied in Singapore with Ocon, but apart from that he was consistent and he deserves his place at the team next year. Ocon being out of F1 for a year is a real shame, I genuinely think he will be one to watch in the future, but could he be good enough to take over from Lewis at Mercedes?, not sure to be honest. He outqualified Perez 16-5 so is obviously quick, but does he have that something? Force India or is that Racing Point, had a torrid year but Lawrence Stroll buying them will hopefully take them to the next level, we wait and see.
Leclerc is definitely one to watch and I think that Ferrari have made the right decision to hire him, what he did at Brazil in Q2 showed he has serious potential. Ericsson is consistent but I am not surprised he is on his way out of F1, he has never been as good as his team mates, but generally kept his seat because of the money he brought. Sauber will be worth watching next year. There association with Alfa Romeo and Ferrari has clearly shown massive gains this year, and I suspect we will see more next year.
Hartley who?, he was pretty average throughout the year, only out-qualifying his higher regarded team mate a small number of times so I am not surprised he is off. Gasley looks pretty handy, but I tend to agree with Martin Brundle's summary, does he really have it in him to be a great? or to challenge Verstappen, it will be fun finding out. Torro Rosso were lacklustre for the right reasons this year, they were basically a test bed for the new Honda engine so I don't think we really saw what they could do.
Stroll is off to Daddy's team, Racing Point next year, so we should be able to see how much potential he really has then. I think he will prove to be a pretty good driver, but I very much doubt anything more than that. I feel a bit sorry for Sirotkin, he outqualified Stroll throughout the season and put in some good performances, but just never got the change to show what he could do due to the car. Williams, a bit like McLaren have got to step up their game. They just got it all wrong this year and the car was atrocious.

Thanks for those summaries, Paul.
It's going to be interesting to see which of the promising new drivers - Leclerc, Gasly, Norris, Russell, Giovinazzi - turn out to be the real deal and which ones fall back as also-rans during 2019.
