Being the aforementioned cheapskate most of my system is "Pre Owned" Fine until you look at new for old replacement on contents insurance. That's how much my kit is worth !? Right I need to do lots of sums to see if I am currently covered. Talking to my insurance co and find I can put a lot of money on the total contents for *no* increase in premium ! great. There is a condition : Have to have a burglar alarm BS4737, Grade 2 EN131 and other expensive spec's Best way to achieve a burglar alarm in insurance co spec that won't cost £1000s please

I use an ADT system which is monitored 24/7 and includes Police monitoring and attendance is certain criteria is met. I think it was about £800 or £1000 to buy and have it installed and we pay a minimal amount (can't remember how much - can check with wifey) per month for maintenance and monitoring.

I'd check whether the alarm makes much of a difference to the price of your insurance. In my case it doesn't. We generally use our alarm but if we hadn't armed it and we were broken into we would not be covered. In my case it's not worth the saving of about a tenner to declare the alarm.

Same with our current Insurance policy, Clive, our previous one demanded that we always set the Alarm, barmy isn't it.

Hiscox insurance is good if you have a high value system.
The Police don't really monitor new alarms any more. If you want that feature, you need to go private.

ADT price seems not so bad and I'm pretty sure I can beat that with the guys I got in for work. Not keen on the monthly payments and not convinced we need monitoring, yet. Maintenance per month or per year is a good earner for alarm co's
Not seen Hiscox come up on comparison sites near the top.
This an odd one as it is only if I up the total value of contents that I need an alarm.
Need to get a quote for an alarm and investigate Hiscox

Not seen Hiscox come up on comparison sites near the top. They don't. It's not about cheap, it's about quality. They will take an itemised list and insure your system new-for-old. If, god forbid, I ever have to claim, I want to be able to buy all my components again. New.

My insurance is as PaulD and others say - you don't have to fit an alarm, but if you do it must be a pro fitment, monitored system, and it must be on when nobody's in the house for more than a certain time. Again as above, the small premium decrease isn't worth the hassle. We still have a 'self-fit' alarm, and usually use it, but it's not declared for insurance - I have no idea how that works out with insurance if we have a break in.

Again as above, the small premium decrease isn't worth the hassle. Agree totally, we had a ADT badged Alarm put in first time around, and it ended up going off all the time, and they were just a bunch of cowboys. It would have been cheaper to just go directly to ADT in the first place, which is what we had to do in the longer run.

I am in a nicer area and my insurance did go down! It's all sewn into buildings insurance, too, and is expensive because we live in a converted barn and the cost of rebuilding is eye watering.

I was told that usually Burglars will only be interested in easy to remove thing, so large speakers and weighing a tonne probably won't be taken, however this is not always the case. I know of someone on another forum who had his entire system taken, with only cables (cut to pieces) left behind.

Fair enough, i do find the amount of money you have to pay for insurance is silly really, plus then the fact they spend all of their effort trying to get out of paying if you ever claim. I had real problems a few years ago when we had a car drive into the side of our house. It took 9 months before they would agree to pay out.

worst thing is if anybody put a claim in.in your area it effects your insurence as its done on post codes,so if some one claims for a pet, roof, building and car damage (crash)etc in your area it effects you insurence,if anything happens to my house in the uk or portugal i would only caim if it was very serious,so touch wood ive been able to pay out of my pocket for the odd little problem.every bit of hifi/av item is named and insured separately,i do not use a combined building and contents policy because if you had a leek in the roof it would put the hifi insurence up,plus you would be supprised the price of all your items together

Revisiting this a year later.
Put in a higher value for contents to be safe
GoCompare best with Home Protect who mention Axa but are much less than others at £364 Next best my existing guys LV at £522 Goes up from there into a lot of money Tried Hiscox £2000 !
Following Martins Money tips tried Aviva as a separate before giving up. 20% off as I'm already a customer. I'll take that £286 *Unlimited* Buildings cover *Unlimited* Contents
I'm staggered. Need to look at the exceptions very carefully....
