I had a very good experience with Aviva when I needed to claim, totally hassle free.
I recommend trying Privilege for a quote - don't think they are on comparison sites.

I switched to Hastings Direct for £333 including declaring my full system value. That's a lot better than Hiscox was at £960 at the last quote.

Another one to look over
Prices for me seem to be about £300 ranging to £500 plus and then on up with madness

20 minutes of my life I won't get back
Hastings kept changing my DoB to my phone number. Changed back about 6 times. Insisted I put a mobile number in even though I hardly use it
Eventually
Unable to give a quote (no reason given) We're not so far out of the ordinary
Wasters
Ring them for a quote ? No thanks. That will be much like M&S the other night 30-40 minutes and likely to say We won't quote, not saying why

As with car insurance, be an insurance tart. No loyalty to any company (they have none to you) and what works for one person is useless for another.

Quite
I steer clear of the cheapest if they have really bad reviews
The companies have got tricky in the extras you can add. Not so much on their own but a lot when added together

The cheapest company always is
Home Protect
Great reviews - for signing up
Appalling reviews for claims
Looks like I stay with L&V this year

I'll only know if Hastings are any good if I ever have to claim. Hope I don't.

One person's experience. You'll find the same for all of them.

Summary : Try Aviva for your insurance you might be very pleasantly surprised
L&V renewal came through Up from low to high £500s
Good company but think and decide to look at the comparison sites. Low £400s, running up to beyond £1500 (!)
Home Protect look to have cleaned up and are backed by AXA. Hmm, could be a winner. Doubt I can beat the price
Contact Direct Line as not on comparison sites. Enter my details. "Ring us up we can't quote on the website" Speak to a bloke, give details "Will have to pass you to some other dept" Speak to bloke, give details "Will have to speak to our estimates dept, ring you back tomorrow" Rang back today "What is your rebuild cost" Same as always, anyway RIBA website does it. L&V had it as unlimited "We must have your rebuild cost or can you let us have your square footage" No
Timely email from Aviva this afternoon Try us as you are a customer and get a discount. Fell foul of their assumptions so could not continue previously
Ok. I'll try again "Click if assumptions are not correct"
Ello, not seen that before
Quote £308
What !?!
Guess who my insurer is for next year ?
<later> *Unlimited* buildings and contents both

Living in the States and maybe looking with a more idealized view, I didn’t figure you had to be as concerned with the hoisting of higher end audio systems and the hassles of security selection.

You have to be an insurance tart in the UK. They don't reward loyalty, often giving new insurers offers not available to existing ones and ramping up premiums in renewals for no good reason. Every year I have to threaten them with taking my business elsewhere before they give me the deal they should have in the first place.
This goes for car insurance as well as home contents and buildings. Using a broker to get the best deal every year helps. I use Adrian Flux for my car insurance and they get me lower premiums with all modifications declared than others offer for a stock model.

Good point about audio systems is the insurance companies don't care much about them Far more concerned with jewelry, watches and similar
Most companies insist on "new for old" values Quite useful but way more than I paid for my system
At 308 I'm paying less than I was 3 or 4 years ago for less cover

Check Trustpilot before you choose any insurance company Aviva looking not good at all
I'm sure their reviews used to be wonderful

£334 from Hastings for us. This is for buildings and contents.
They all have a poor rep if you dig deep. I aim never to have to claim on them.

I balance the good v's the bad
Unlikely to get the 100% feedbacks you get on Ebay but I like to have at least 50% on Trustpilot

Other people's opinions are notoriously fickle. I place very little stock in them.
